McNeill, Bowden

Meet on Courts

NEW YORK, Feb. 20 (U. P.).— Don McNeill of Oklahoma City and Frank Bowden, New York, meet in a semi-final match of the National Indoor Men’s Tennis Singles Championship today. The winner probably will play the title match with Bobby Riggs of Chicago, No. 1 amateur, who is expected to win a semi-final victory tomorrow over Frank Froehling, also'of Chicago. McNeill and Bowden met two

years ago on the Tth Regiment|

Armory boards, where today’s match will be played. McNeill won the indoor championship in that contest. Both pack power in their Strokes but the winner today will need it if he meets’ Riggs for the title. . There also was one semi-final round engagement scheduled in the women’s singles, with Pauline Betz, of Los Angeles, the defending cham-

pion, slated to meet Gracyn Wheeler, Santa Monica, Cal. The other semi-final involving two Brookline, Mass.,, players, Mrs. Sarah Palfrey Fabyan and Katharine Winthrop, will be played tomorrow, with the final scheduled for Saturday.

Same Old Story In Illinois, Too

T'imes Speciai CHAMPAIGN, Ill, Feb. 29.—It is now useless to send orders for

the l1llinois state high school basketball tournament because all tckets which are available to the general public are sold, C. E. Bowen, business manager of Illi» nois University athletics, announced today. The number of orders received by Feb. 23, the deadline, exceeded the 3300 tickets assigned to the public by approximately 1000.

Action-at 8 Against Hawks

Six Teams Will Start in Sectional Opener

Tonight’s Schedule

7 P. M.—New Augusta vs. Southport. : 8 P. M.—Tech vs. Decatur Central.

9 P. M.—Speedway vs. Washington.

Six of the 16 entries in the local high school sectional basketball tournament will go to the post this

evening in the opening session at the Tech gym. The top game of the evening— ohne that’s had the fans arguing since pairings were - releaged last week—is the Tech-Decatur ,Central clash at 8 o’clock. The Decatur Hawks rank as the big Marion County threat, while Coach Bayne Freeman's Big Green five must be rated with the best inside the city limits.

Tech Works Out

Tech was sent through its final workout yesterday, a practice devoted to penetrating a zone defense. That was the East Sider’s weakness last Saturday when they lost to Washington, and Coach Freeman doesn’t intend to be the victim of the same tactics again. Likely starters for Tech will be Frank Buddenbaum and Jack Bradford, forwards; Bob Gray, center, and Houston Meyer and Dick Evans, guards. Burke Anderson, whose Hawks haven’t been beaten since the start of the year, plans to open with this lineup: William Butler and Kenneth Moore, forwards; Vernon Miller, center, and Max Shanklin and Sam Staats, guards. A pair of county teams—New Augusta and Southport—will start proceedings at 7 o'clock in what may turn into a vicious fight. The Southport Cardinals, who won last year's sectional, don’t shape up as a strong a team this season, but they've been up against some tough competition this season. The New Augusta five, now being coached by Joe Jordan since Bill Bugg's resignation, has fared well this season and promise to give southerners a battle.

Dimancheft Probably Out

Boris Dimancheff, one of Washington’s ace athletes, probably will be out of the Continentals’ lineup when they go against Speedway in the evening finale. Dimanchefi suffered a hand injury in a collision with forward Courtney Gerrish during a practice session yesterday and is expected to be sidelined. The Continentals rate as favorites over the Spark Plugs but this is sectional time when plenty of upsets blossom. The other 10 teams begin play tomorrow, with the opening game between Warren Central and Oaklandon scheduled at the early hour of 9-a. m. One hour later Broad Ripple and Shortridge will settle an intra-city argument, with the Blue Devils favored to win out.

Strack Injured

Dave Strack, Shortridge guard, who has been receiving treatment for a knee injury suffered in Tuesday’s practice, may not start in this contest, however. In that case the Shortridge lineup will include Walt Freihofer and Bryan West, forwards; Larry Yeager, center, and Chuck Benjamin and Dick Gage, guards. The third morning: mix-up, scheduled for 11 c’clock, will bring together Lawrence and Castleton. The first round will be completed in afternoon games pairing Beech Grove and Manual and Ben Davis and Franklin Township, with the first of the second-round encounters on the books for 4 p. m.

Scribes, Butler

DESPITE 64 BASKETBALL tournaments on one day, delayed telegrams and printers plagued with transposition, the life of a sports writer sometimes is very nice. Not bad at all. That’s the way it was last night when Butler University called in the city’s sports scriveners to the banquet. table, let them gab among themselves and offer suggestions on how to improve the Relays, scheduled for March 16. About all the boys were there— from the three papers, the radios and the press associations. Though there was little formality or speech-making, the suave Mr. Tony Hinkle, Butler athletic

chief, did the toastmastering and told how the Relays were started

DePauw Five Gets Revenge

By UNITED PRESS Indiana State, Valparaiso and DePauw won Indiana college conference basketball games last night, leaving the myriad state colleges with only -11 games to be played before uniforms are placed in the mothballs for another year. DePauw’s five gained revenge on the Wabash quint last night by taking a final-minute decision, 40 te 37. Earlier this season the Little Giants trimmed DePauw, 41 to 21, at Crawfordsville. The score was tied, 14 to 14, at the half last night, but DePauw's offensive began clicking with a vengeance in the closing quarter and blasted through for several field goals while limiting the Wabash scoring mainly to gift throws. Shalley scored 10 points for DePauw while Fisher and Rhode whipped Jlrs ough an equal number for Waash Valparaiso took an overtime, 59 to 58, game from Central Normal on a free throw by Krenskie as the extra period drew to a close. Central Normal led, 31 to 26, at the half, but Valpo pulled up rapidly and in the final quarter the score changed on virtually every shot. Koepke led a late rally that pulled Valparaiso out in front, 54. to 53, but Farr hit a free throw to bring about the overtime. Koepke scored 16 points while Janeway led Central Normal with 2 a State downed Ball State, 36 to 31, gaining a measure of revenge for a 41 to 40 victory earned by the Cardinals on the Muncie

Twilight of Career Is Near

For Timmons of Manual

will have a record that stands considerable perusing. For one thing, he’s helped the South Siders to two city championships. Too, - he received allcity honorable mention on the gridiron last fall and has run the 440 on the track squad for three{years. Those three records make up an enviable records. But Bob didn’t stop there. Timmo is a good-natured, modest feliow and these attributes have helped him to the presidency of the senior class, membership in the Roines Club, senior honorary organization for boys; the vice presidency of the Hi-Y club, and a place in the Letterman's C Club, a new society at the South Side institution. At home (803 Sanders St.) he gets up at 5:30 a. m. each day and eats what his mother, Mrs. Leonard E. Timmons, puts on the table. None of this special and bothersome dieting to keep in condition, or something. In case youre out at fhe Tech Gym tomorrow afternoon watching the sectional battles, Timmo’s number is 4 and he has hair that leans to the wavy side.

Whippets Meet Butler Pups

The local A. A. U. basketball crown and the opportunity to represent Indianapolis in the State tourney at Shelbyville next week will be at stake tonight when the Butler Bullpups and Indiana Central Whippets answer the official’s whistle at 8:15 at the Central Y,. Both teams displayed scoring power plus rugged defense last night in downing their opponents. The Bullpups had much the easier task in eliminating a willing but less capable Shamrock Club quintet, 31 to 18, while the Whippet five raced to a 40-36 victory over the host “Y” Reps. The final game tonight will match two quintets that are equal in size, speed, defensive ability and endurance. Both fives use the same style of attack—a fast-breaking, fire department style. The final game will be preceded by a preliminary clash at 7 between two quintets to be chosen from the teams already out of the tourna-_ ment. Individual awards will be. given the players of the winning and runner-up teams.

It’s Rain Again; Poor Biscuit!

ARCADIA, Cal, Feb. 29 (U. P.).— Showers pelted the crisp track at Santa Anita Park today and rail-

birds and experts alike shook their heads. A heavy rain would mean the $100,000 handicap had jinxed Seabiscuit again. - Twice nosed out of the world’s richest horse racing prize and broken down while training for the stake last year, Seabiscuit almost certainly will be scratched from his fourth if the present pasteboard footing is churned by rain. Trainer Tom Smith, who has nursed his pet through the years to wtihin striking distance of Sun Beau's all-time money-winning record, says the Biscuit is sharper now than ever in his career. And to prove it, he points to the smashing win Saturday over the San Antonio handicap’s mile and a furlong in track record time. But Owner Charles S. Howard for the past three years has been adamant in refusing to let his champion go over anything but a fast track. Whether the lure of the rich stake and the fact that a victory will make Seabiscuit the first horse to top the $400,000 mark will influence Howard is one of the big question marks of the race.
