‘Probe WPA Ban’ On Lord's Prayer
NEW BERN, N. C., Feb. 28 (U. P.).—-Works Progress Administra tion officials today investigated a charge that relief workers had been ordered not to recite the Lord's Prayer on Government time. The Rev. W. B. Everett, pastor of Saint Mary's Baptist Church, charged that WPA supervisors had “cracked down” on 44 women who had been accustomed to beginning their day’s work in a sewing room by reciting the Lord's Prayer aloud and in unison. He said the prayer had taken only “a half to three-quarters of a hue daily of Government ime.
PAGEANT TO NOTE CLUB ANNIVERSARY
A two-part pageant and musical revue will be presented by the Woman's Improvement Club at 7:30 o'clock tonight at the Crispus Attucks High School auditorium. The program will celebrate the 37th anniversary of the founding of the club, which has worked for improvement of tubercular Indianapolis Negroes. Originally a literary club, the association kept a cottage hospital for many years at 535 Agnes St. It later donated a table and chair and the use of a Negro doctor at Flanner House, Negro settlement house here. Mrs. Ethel Roy Cox is club president. Other officers are Mrs. Alice Brokenburr, vice president; Mrs. Rose Hummons, secretary; Mrs. Artie Taylor, assistant secretary, and Mrs. Francis Berry Coston, treasurer.
NORTH SIDE PARKING BILLS ARE PREPARED
Three Safety Board ordinances limiting parking on North Side streets were prepared today by the city Legal Department for introduction to City Council Monday night. The ordinances would prohibit parking at all times on the north side of 15th $t., from Central Ave. to Delaware St., and would limit
parking to one and one-half hours|
on the south side of 15th St., from Delaware to New Jersey Sts.; both sides of Alabama. St., from 13th to 17th Sts., and both sides of 16th St., from Capitol to Central Aves.
MEEKNESS IS URGED IN BISHOP'S SERMON
Meekness, as it implies the recognition of God’s authority, was urged by the Rt. Rev. C. C. J. Carpenter, Bishop of Alabama, speaking at the noon Lenten service in Christ Episcopal Church today. “Meekness does not mean cringing -servility,” he explained, “but this common misuse of the word makes it difficult for some to understand this beatitude.” Bishop ‘Carpenter characterized Moses, despite his force for leadership as “a meek man.”
TRAPPER KILLS TWO BEFORE HIS CAPTURE
CRYSTAL FALLS, Mich., Feb. 28 (U. P.).—Marion Marsh, 44-year-old trapper who learned to use a gun in the World War, scattered 50 shells from his high-powered pistol late Tuesday, killing two friends, wounding a third and endangering the lives of several other persons. Sheriff Emery J. King, who held Marsh closely guarded in the Iron County jail pending determination of his status, said the war veteran apparently had become mentally deranged.
