Speaker Discusses Women of ‘India
“Today the women of India are second only to the American women in the important public posts they hold,” Bhicco Batlivala, young lawyer from Bombay and London, said today. She was to speak this afternoon before members of the Propylaeum Club. Singe 1935, India has had 60 women legislative members and one cabinet minister, she said. She- pointed out that in-1500 B.C. women in India had complete civic’ equality’ with men and by 500 B. C. were given further property rights, adding that it was only with the coming of the British that.India’s social structure was changed and women pushed into the country’s social and political background. : Lg : As for child marriage, she asserts it has been non-existent in our Western sense—the marriage ceremonies being only betrothal ceremonies with the ghildren returning to their own’ families to live until they reach marriageable age, usually when they are 18 years old. “Purdah,” she said, “made its appearance during what was the Middle Ages in Europe, following the invasion of the Moslems, who were accustomed to seclude their women. The custom was never widely adopted and was restricted exclusively to the upper classes. Today it has been virtually abandoned altogéther.” ; Miss Batlivala was sent to England at the age of 9 to be educated and at 21 was admitted to the English bar, the .youngest woman ever to be accorded the ‘honor. She has been assistant minister of education in the State.of Baroda, India, and legal adviser to a British film company. She is now engaged in private practice, specializing in commercial cases. ¥ ge : #" ”® 2 : » » 8 : : Miss Mary Birch Ingram, daughtet of Capt. Jonas Howard Ingram, U. S.
