Urges Proper ‘Health Scheme

BOSTON, Feb. 20 (U. P.).—If the -general habits of living are not hygienic, it is foolish to suppose any cosmetic will maintain skin health, Dr. Perry C. Baird Jr., said in an address at Harvard Medical School. “Many women would obtain much better results in the care of their complexion,” he said, “if more time were spent in organizing life on a basis to insure adequate sleep, adequate out-docor exercise, a wellbalanced diet, proper fluid intake, and other hygienic considerations. “The complexion reflects the excesses and indulgerices and poor hygiene of living very quickly, and beyond the point, which can be disguised or corrected by cosmetics.” Dr. Baird said that all vitamins seem to be essential to maintain the health of the normal skin and added that “to cleanse the skin one may choose water, soap and water, or various oils and cold creams.” “Reliance on cold creams, he said, does no harm apparently in most cases in adults but in younger peo-

ple may aggravate the tendency to acne. Though he believed the use of soap was necessary, Dr. Baird said “warm water alone is a surprisingly effective and suitable cleansing agent—generally not fully appreciated.” ; “The moderate and sensible use of face powder, rouge and lipstick do not injure the normal skin,” he said, “if they are removed thoroughly before retiring .and if the user has no hypersensitiveness to any of the ingredients.”
