Regard Market Rise As Technical.
By UNITED PRESS Stocks gained ‘fractions to more
than $1 in moderately active trad-
ing today at New Yotk. Bonds made an irregular gain. Wheat eased after early firmness and cotton futures were steady. Short covering and selective buying accounted for the rise, which was regarded as technical.’ Market news continued to reflect a reces-
sion in business, except the auto-
mobile line, in which retail sales were reported sharply higher than a year ago. Steel shares moved up as' much as $2 in Bethlehem and more than $1 in U. S. Steel. Coppers were firm for a time but recetled on profit-taking. Studebaker equaled its 1940 high at $1250, up 50 cents and other motors were firm. Demand con= tinued for motor equipments, nota- |
its: 1640 peak: Goodyear equaled its high for the year. Aviation shares held firm. Imminence of unification of New York City traction lines kept interest high in traction shares and several made new highs. Numer-|P ous other special issues made highs, including ‘Continental Can, Cuneo Press, International Mercantile Marine, Loft, Reynolds Metals and Vulcan Detinning, which jumped $4. Budd Wheel made a new high at $6.25, up 50 cents. . Mercantile issues were firm. Electrical equipments, recently weak, came back as much as $1 in Westinghouse Electric. "GOOD Music" By James Thrasher
John Barbirolli, who has done a good job with one of the world’s toughest musical assignments, has been re-engaged for two years as conductor of the New York Phil-harmonic-Symphony Orchestra. It was Mr. Barbirolli”s unenviable task to take Arturo Toscanini’s place as head of the New York orchestra. ‘His appointment was the signal for mutterings, written and verbal. During his first season comparisons were severe as well as odious. Yet the British conductor “muddled through,” as the “British say, and has won himself a goodly following during his three years at the Philharmonic’s helm. Tomorrow Mr. Barbirolli celebrates his new appointment with a concert (sans soloist) which includes Sir Hamilton Harty’s transcription of a Handel Arietta and Passacaglia; Beethoven’s . Fourth Symphony; a suite called “A Set of Three” by John Powell. the American composer, and Ravel's Bolero.
i -
Bruno Walter returns tonight as ‘guest conductor of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (9 o'clock, NBCBlue). And before we leave Mr. Barbirolli and his new appointment completely, this might be a. good point to inform you that Mr. Walter will be: one of the Philharmonic’s guest conductors next season. The other invited guest is Dimitri Mitropoulis, who conducts the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra. This evening, to return fo the present, Mr. Walter will appear in the dual capacity of conductor and pianist. This will be in Handel's Concerto Grosso in G Minor, which opens the program. Devoting himself entirely to the baton, Mr. Walter will then lead the orchestra in the “Haffner” Symphony by Mozart,
