more treacherous ladder to success than those who make a sudden rise from obscurity. They cope with more prejudices than the novice and emerge victorious over failure. Their bess quality is that they “can take

Offhand, there is the case of Olga Bachlanova, once the slinkiest of the silent screen vampires. Olga left the movies when they were speechless, she says, of her own accord, because she wearied of posing in seductive and semi-nekkid poses. She slipped out of the limelight for many years until one had to

a glint of recognition in the present generation of movie-goers.

Olga Comes Back

The other night, Olga stepped back into the spotlight as a songstress at the svelte Persian Room of the Hotel Plaza. Pleasant of voice and easy to look at, she was an instantaneous success. However dubious John Barrymore’s triumphant return to Manit is being regarded as .a successful comeback. For he had remained off Broadway for 17 years and the legion of doubters said that he never could regain the adulation of a Gotham populace. But the proof is at the boxoffice. The critics said the play he’s in, “My Dear Children,” is a pretty sad exhibition of haminess. Ang yet the attraction is a scllout. It wasn’t so long ago that petite and flaxen-haired Simone Simon departed from these shores for her native France, admitiedly a Hollywood failure. But the other evening, the cellu: loid scouts and film critics saw a preview of her latest picture made in France. It is titled “The Human Beast” and the consensus was that Simone had given a sensationally superb performance.

Simone May Return

Don’t be surprised if she is beckoned to sunkist California again in a comeback that will be even more gladly heralded than her original visit. ~The “comeback” story of Oscar Serlin, producer of one of Broadway’s greatest successes, “Life With Father,” is the most dramatic of the season. Once he was a well-known Broadway showman, but he dropped the profits in failures and bzcame a talent scout. But Broadway was in his blcod and he determined to put “Lifer With Father” on the boards. So by pinching pennies here and therer and ' artfully ducking the landlord, he whipped “Life With Father” together, sold the enterprise to the backers and set it up at the patrician Empire Theater. It »is one of the big money makers. Flushed by her pictorial luck, Katherine Hepburn came- to the Rialto several years ago as the star of a show labelled “The Lake.” It was a dud and fell to the ground with a low thud. Some critics -wanted to know: “Who called that movie star an actress?” Around Broadway it was felt that Hepburn never would risk _the venom of the dramatic reviewers again, But last season Katherine Hepburn came back—as the star of Philip Barry’s comedy, “The Phil adelphia Story.”
