TROOPERS SAVE ‘MOTHER, CHILD SEIZED BY MOB

Two Maryland Officers and |

‘Several Farmers Injured. In Street Melee.

STOCKTON, Md., Feb. 14 (U. P.). =Two state troopers and several farmers were injured today in a furious half-hour battle between 25 troopers and 300 members of a mob which had taken a Negro woman and her daughter from the Snow Hill jail. Maryland State Police said Sergt. W. H. Weber and Charles Disney were injured during a hand-to-hand battle in which clubs, stones and bottles were wielded. The mob dispersed. after the battle, taking its wounded with it. : : Sergt. Homer - R. Baker said several members of the mob were hurt, but police. have not been able to learn their names. Neither of the :S2spers, was seriously injured, he said. ) Seize Mother, Child

. The mob took the -wqman and girl, identified by Sergt. Baker as Marcie Blake - -Collick, 32-year-old common-law wife of #Dave Collick; sought for the slaying of Harvey Pilchard, 61-year old farmer, and their daughter Virginia, 14.. - The two were being held in the Snow Hill jail for “investigation” in the slaying of Mr. Pilchard and the critical wounding of his wife at their farm home Sunday night, Sergt. Baker said. Collick is believed hiding in a swamp near here. -“I arrived here after the . fight had -started,” Sergt. Baker said. “The police and mobsters were milling around in the street. Some of the mobsters were throwing stones and others were wielding bottles and clubs. : Trooper Knocked Down

“I waded in to try and help the other troopers get the women out of the automobile, around which the fight was centered. “Weber was knocked down by some one with a club and was being cuffed around. Disney was knocked down by some one who swung a club on his head. “Weber finally got the women to his car and drove away. Some of the mob started to follow, but we stopped that. They began to break up then. Some went home and others continued their search for Collick.” Police said at least two Negroes entered Mr. Pilchard’s home and demanded money. After it was given them one of the men shot Mr. Pilchard, critically wounded and raped his wife. She climbed to the roof of their home and attracted the attention of neighbors.

One Is Unidentified

Mrs. Pilchard identified Collick fs one of the men who entered the home, but was unable to deny the other. However, the mob which took the. woman and girl out of the Snow - Hill jail was looking also for George Selby, another. Negro, whom Sh er J. W. Hall, of Worcester Coun said was being held as a witness to the shooting of Mr. Pilchard. - Mr. Hall assured the mob that Selby was not there and never had been held in his jail.
