Tes a fangerous business, this Giegnosing the styles of a couple of basketball teams and citing their strong points,
weaknesses and mistakes.
Especially so in the case of
Purdue and Indiana since their next meeting on March 2 may make anyone's observations look silly.
* But Indiana’s 46-39 victory over the Boilermakers produced some highlights de-
serving mention. Foremost, probably, was the Hoosiers’ ability to hit the basket from any position or angle. And right here you run into your first argument. Many will
Bloomington boosters will claim that their boys do those tricks all the time. Maybe the men of McCracken were hot. On the other hand, they
on 20. That’s no brilliant average for a team that’s supposed to be “on.” Our explanation would be that the Hoosiers have been taught to let fly whenever they’ré within reasonable distance of the hoop. And before Purdue or anybody else can beat them, they're going to have to refuse the Hoosiers the
shots that other teams could be!’
granted with comparative safety.
They Could Lead Yells
It’s a shame, too, that Branch McCracken can’t think of something for his boys to do with their free hands. The Hoosiers in general, and Bill Menke in particular, apparently need only one hand for their goal sniping. Several times Menke, with a perfect right to use both hands, shunned this orthodox method for the more exciting pushup twinkle-your-toes shot.
‘Obviously Purdue didn’t crack the |
meshes with the accuracy expected of a Lambert combination. On 64 attempts from the field, the Boiler-
bert lads did move through for their scores, they did it in a busi-ness-like manner. The guality was there, but nof the quantity. " A larger factor in the Hoosiers’ success, we believe, was their ‘confidence. In fact, their nomnchalance almost bordered on the carelessness characteristic of professional basketball teams. Even when Purdue led, 5-0, early in the game, Indiana- showed no signs of tightness, although its attack was somewhat disorganized.
Remember Minnesota
Here is an asset, though, that may backfire on the I. U. club. The Hoosiers were in much the same frame of mind after their brilliant early-season record and were an easy mark for Minnesota's underdogs, Any of seven future Big Ten opponents may make McCracken’s boys regret this “why worry” attitude. Indiana’s shifting man-to-man defense was much more effective in the second session than it was in the first half. Purdue players filtered through the Hoosiers’ line frequently in early play; and it wasn’t much trouble for a Boilermaker .to turn up under the basket without a white-shirted watcher. One detail of the HooSiers’ play that brought frequent results was their trick of staying in Purdue territory after having lost the ball. Most teams make one or two stabs at recovering the leather, then withdraw, but Indiana players kept up their heckling until Purdue had advanced to midfloor. that the Crimson stoie the ball was & nice reward for this extra effort. ” = 2
Tierney All Alone
Individual honors were well &ivided. Bill Menke scored five fielders and two free throws for highpoint laurels, while Don Blanken and Fred Beretta topped the Pur-
due scorers with three field goals |s
and five free tosses apiece. Each team used only seven men, and Tierney of Purdue was the only player who didn’t tally. ” ” zn
The shot that apparently sent the Hoosiers away was Bill Menke’s one-hander from far out that tied the score at 11-11. Bill hesitated momentarily as if trying to decide whether to use one hand or two. He let go with one, and the ball touched only the mets on its journey. It was a shot that would have

If any of the 6500 fans came to see .Coaches Branch McCracken or Piggy Lambert perform, they were disappointed. Neither showed any mannerisms for which he is justly famous. Branch, for the most part, sat with his head in his hands, and on one occasion assumed the politician’s pose—that of leaning far back with both thumbs under his vest, He looked excited only once. That was when Indiana went into its semi-stall late in the game to preserve the lead, Then Branch issued plenty of loud orders. i Piggy sat gloomily alongside his substitutes and failed to go into his floor-walking routine. All around, it was a bitter night for him. # # ”
Zimmer Sparkles If you must have a hero, take
lad who saw considerable action. It’s hard to believe that this was only Andy's fourth varsity game, for he appeared to know what it was all about.
