JANE JORDAN—
a
DEAR JANE JORDAN—I have been going with a boy since
September and I am| very much in love with him, but .I am afraid
my temper is going to separate us. It seems that I just can’t control it even though I have been trying very hard. This boy just will tease me and it is always in fun. For a _ while I can take it but then I get mad and we spend the rest of the Svening arguing. Sometimes he gets up and leaves, or else we won't say anything to each other for some time. I'm always sorry afterward and tell him so, but then the next time it is the same thing all over again. | It is always my fault and I tell myself over and over again that I won't let my temper get the best of me. I want to do something about this as it would hurt me deeply if this causes us to split up. = D. W. B. i 2 . 8 » » f
Answer—Perhaps you would get along better with some other boy. Are you touchy in your relationships with others as well? If so the fault lies chiefly with you. co-operate with others and expect each person to-adapt himself to you and your wishes without making any concessions to him and his wishes. : . * .. Everybody must learn to take a certain amount of teasing from his ‘friends. You can’t get through life without being razzed for your peculiarities. If you've learned to “take it” like a good sport
from everybody else but find yourself irritated heyond endurance
only by this young man, then we must suspect him of enjoying your discomfiture too much. ‘ There is a certain amount of malice in all teasing. Even our dearest friends irritate us at times, and vice versa.” Our affection is .with a certain amount of disapproval which we set aside because our affection |is the stronger of the two attitudes. Teasing is a useful device for translating momentary irritation into humor. It gives us an opportunity to “tell the other person off” in a laughing way. We can remind him of his idiosyncrasies without losing his regard. In turn we are obliged to grant him the same privilege of relieving his irritation toward us by the same roundabout method. + In spite of the fdtt sthat it is socially useful, teasing is a dangerous weapon. Soonet or later somebody goes too far. When malice is untempered by sufficient affection to remove! the sting, the

from experience what your reaction will be to his teasing. If he doesn’t like the results, why does he keep it up? In any event you are handling the situation very badly by futile bursts of temper, -
