Santa Claus will have no
tournaments this year and, as
School principal, can remember, the town never has had
one. They can’t recall a Santa Claus entry, either, over at
Mr. Trester’s office. Well, if the town hasn’t any
"team, surely it produces some play-
ers. “Nope,” contradicted Mr. Loehr, “There's not a Santa Claus pupil on the Dale varsity this year.” He prefaced this remark by ex-
plaining that Clay Township pupils |;
(Santa Claus to you) are assigned to the Carter Township - School (Dale, if you please). : But Dale basketball has had its big moments this season without any gifts from Santa Claus. Its
record to date lists 12 victories and |g
four Jdefeats. The boys also won a New Year's blind tournament at Cannelton, defeating their hosts and Tell City, and on Jan. 27 they romped to the Spencer County title
by eliminating Chrisney, Rockport | Bicknell
and Richland.
‘Mr. Loehr reminded us that the|Lint
county victory was Dale’s sixth in seven years and that the lads will be. trying for their fifth sectional
triumph in seven years in the ap- |g
proaching meet at Tell City.
Wars There’s no overemphasis on bas-|Tipt
ketball at Dale, either, Mr. Loehr emphasized. The team didn’t report until Nov. 22 and before that the school played an- eight-game six-man-football schedule.
We forgot to ask whether Santa Gary Claus would have any of that sport.| =

A HOME TOWN boy, Butler’s Jack Clayton eats his evening meals with the family. And regardless of whether it’s a basketball night, he always does heavy duty with the knife and fork. But Coach Hinkle goes in for a lighter pre-game diet and usually sits his boys down to a ration of honey and toast. At Madison, Wis., the other night the team had the typical Hinkle fare. Clayton mopped his up in a hurry. “How was the meal, Jack?” Tony asked. “Okeh, coach, but gee that steak was tough.” = hr a
A Boost for Gas City
MAYOR BOB RAY is on the point of yielding his place as first citizen of Gas City to Wilbur S. Cummins, one of those few gentlemen left in this commonwealth coaching an undefeated basketball team. : Here are some facts Mayor Ray and the rest of Gas City would like for you to know: The Tigers have
won 17 straight this year, still have
to play Summitville, Jefférson Township, Roll and Swayzee. . . . The boys have taken a total of 911 shots and hit 270. ... At the foul line they've converted 146 of 250. . . . Averaged 40 points a game against their opponents’ 24. Cummins’ coached teams have won 45
‘of 54 scheduled games in the last
three seasons. ... Gas City hasn't been trimmed on its home floor in two years... . Four seniors and seven juniors compose the Gas City first string. ; Geographical note: Gas City is located six miles south of Marion
and will play in the same sectional
as the Giants.

It was the largest field ever to. compete in a Texas tourney, and it included virtually every top-flight professional. The skies were partly cloudy and temperatures mild when the first foursome began the trek around Brackenridge Park course. At sixminute intervals the pros and amateurs followed. It will be late afternoon before the field finishes.

triumph of the season. Northwestern will be the final this year. lost to Illinois, Indiana and Ohio State. Steiner, the squad’s leading scorer, will miss his third consecutive game because of influenza, from which he is rapidly recovering. Melvin Vandermeer, Charles ' Atkinson, Bill Hamilton are still on the injured list. George Knobel has just recovered from scarlet fever while Lyle Neat, Harold Braden and Elwood Norris have yet to iron out tuition difficulties with the administration. All are lettermen with the exception of Braden and Norris.
The Brighter Side
Hinkle will manage, however, to have Byron Gunn and Bob Dietz together -at the forward berths for the first time in five games. Gunn has starred in Butler’s last two starts after missing the previous four games: because of an injured knee. Dietz has missed two consecutive games because of a cold. As run-ner-up to Steiner in scoring, Dietz is expected to add a little offensive punch. Hinkle’s major difficulty tonight is selecting the fifth starter. Jack Clayton, local junior, probably will start at center, moving Loren Joseph, regular pivot man, to a guard, giving the squad added height. James M:Cray, pint-size juni is the probable fifth man althofigh Hinkle may favor Wilbur Schumacher, Wilbur Whitinghill or Lester /ICombs, all of whom have become hew finds in the last wzek. Northwestern invades the local goalhouse with a record of seven victories against four losses and a probable first five that includes two Hoosiers.
