© BURGLARS GET BLAME FOR FiRE AT JUNK YARD
Firemen Find Office Looted; Awning Plant Damage Put at $13,000.
Burglars were blamed for starting a fire early today in the office of Fred Schuchman’s junk yard at 17th and Mill Sts. The loss was estimated at between $2000 and $2500. While police and firemen investigated this blaze, owners estimated at $13,000 the loss in a spectacular two-alarm fire which swept the two-story plant of the James Montgomery Awning & Supply Co., 2404 E. Washington St., late yesterday. When firemen entered the junk vard office, they found the rear door standing open. Employees said they had locked it with two bolts last night. After extinguishing the flames which they confined to the office and prevented from spreading to warehouses on either side of it, the firemen investigated and found that an adding machine, check writer and typewriter were missing from the office. They were valued at| $150. Firemen believe the blaze was
caused by a cigaret dropped by
the burglars. The awning plant fire was believed to have started when friction ignited chemicals. All materials
and machinery on the second floor|
of the building were destroyed. Howard Bryant, 22, Bridgeport, an employee: told police he was working on the second floor water-
- proofing canvas with some of the 7g
chemicals. “Suddenly they burst into flames,” he said. He was burned on the face. : Battalion Chief Harvey Keppel narrowly escaped injury when the - second floor gave way beneath him. "He grabbed a window sill and hung there, saving himself. - ~ James Montgomery, owner of the awning company, estimated his loss at from $7000 to $8000 and H. G. ‘Reger, owner of the building, put his loss at $6000.
