BACKBOARD
By J. E. O'BRIEN
NOBODY could blame Tony Hinkle if tuday, on Butler's 90th birthday, he would be too low to help blow out the candles on the cake. He can’t remember when
‘he’s had five basketball start-
ers together, and there’s no telling when they’ll be together again. Right now there’s talk of holding a reunion of the 1939-40 team around a
hot dog oven on the campus some time in May just so the boys can meet one another before commencement. At that, though, the situation isn’t as bad as it was last Saturday. Although Harold Braden and Lyle Neat still are ineligible, Bob Dietz tore off his mustard plaster yesterday and worked out with the squad. Dietz, it was announced today, is to start at one of the forward posts. Capt. Jerry Steiner was out of bed, too, and showed up at the Fieldhouse. But three railbirds were appointed to watch Jerry to make sure he didn’t try to climb into suit No. 10. The doc says he’ll have to stay out for a week or two yet. Tony isn’t sure, either, that Ben Gunn is just right. “I let him play too long last Saturday,” he said. “I could tell by his eyes that he wasn’t fully recovered.” As grandma would say, the lad still looked “peek-ed.”
Blue Coach Isn’t Blue Hinkle is certain that this year’s team has lost more work hours than any he’s ever coached. “I can remember the time—and it hasnt been so long ago—when we would have had to cancel our games if we would have had this many players out,” he declared. But Hinkle isn’t blue, and none of the athletic staff is, not even Trainer Jim Morris whose life these days is a continual round of peering into inflamed throats and binding sore muscles. Actually you'd expect the Red Cross flag to be flying over the Fieldhouse. It seems that one out of every three athletes who comes into the dressing room gets a throat swab and is rationed an envelope of brown pills. Butler's business at hand, of course, is the Northwestern game tomorrow evening. Hinkle doesn’t know much about the Wildcats, or for that matter, doesn’t care.
Scouts Three and Loses
“We scouted only three teams this season,” he explained. “Those were Notre Dame, Illinois and Indiana, and we lost to all of ’em. Scouting isn’t so important in basketball. After all, you can do just so much with a ball on the floor, and nobody is going to make it disappear.” That's true, Tony, but you'd have a hard time convincing Wisconsin fans of that. They say your Bulldogs did so many tricks with the leather that two Madison detective sergeants sat on the Badgers’ bench during the second half to relay clues to the home team. Seriously, Butler, in defeating Wisconsin, made good on 20 of the 50 even shots it took from the field.
Concerned About Defense “If only they'd watch their defense,” said Tony. “Apparently they don’t care how many their opponents are scoring just as long as they are scoring two or three more.” “But,” he sighed as he watched some freshman prospect do a half twist in midair and drop a goal through the Fieldhouse basket. “I suppose that’s modern basketball.” Modern is right, Mr. Hinkle. And you wouldn't object, would you, if we told the public that the combination you're using now is virtually the | w 1941 Butler team en toto?
Harvard Aid Scores
‘Pros’ in College
BOSTON, Feb. 7 (U. P.).—Scoring “deceit” and “hypocrisy” by professional #@thletes posing as amateurs in colleges, Athletic Director William J. Bingham of Harvard University said in an international radio address last night that “under pressure of alumni many colleges are yielding to modified systems of athletic subsidies and proselyting | ¥ practices. “1f we cannot conduct our intercollegiate programs without subsidizing our athletes or proselyting prospective candidates, let wus frankly admit that we have gone the whole professional way and that henceforth we shall pay our athletes for their services.” Bingham suggested that colleges schedule games with opponents whose ideals are comparable to their own.
King Takes Class A Title in Trapshoot
MIAMI, Fla., Feb. 7 (U.P) —R. A. King of Wichita Falls, Tex., added the Class A singles championship of the Tropical Trapshoot to his laurels today. King, president of the American Amateur Trapshooting Association, smashed 198 of 200 birds to shade Ed Luyken, Nashville, Tenn., with 196, as the three-day event closed Charles Gunning of Longmont, Colo., reached third with 193.

: By UNITED PRESS The Boston Bruins were within one point of a first place deadlock today after their 6-2 victory over the pace-setting New York Rangers last night. Led by Bill Cowley’s two goals, the Bruins scored in every period and had a four goal lead before Neil Colville caged the first Ranger tally in the fiinal period. The Detroit Red Wings extended their winning streak to seven games with a 3-1 victory over the New York Americans. Ebbie Goodfellow scored the winning goal for the Wing after Eddie Shore had knotted the score for the Americans in the second. The standings:

Biggest Sport in California Played Right on Sidewalk
MLEMORE

HOLLYWOOD, Feb. 7 (U. P.).—Southern California’s biggest sport is not played on a golf course or a football field or a race track, but on a
except a vacant stare, a mind to who plays three-horse parlays at a
The sport is known as star-gazing, and it is played almost every night
outside of theaters where world premieres or previews are being held. I interviewed Sidney Ney, one of the recognized top-ranking stargazers in Hollywood, as to how the game was played by an expert. With quiet pride. Ney told me he has not missed any opening since the Gish girls gave their all in “Broken Blossoms.”
Sidney Getting Better
“That time,” he said, “I was a novice. I simply stood on the fringe of the crowd. Today my technique has so improved that I am often in the photographs taken of the stars as they walk into the theater lobby.”
As we talked, I looked about his trophy room. On the left was a collar he had torn from Ronald Colman. Just beneath it was a sidecomb snatched from Norma Talmadge’s hair. In a glass case was a wisp of moustache which they had successfully snipped off Lionel Barrymore, and a cigar butt which Jack Benny had discarded occupied a place of honor on the mantlepiece. One Must Have Taste
Mr. Ney explained that the ability to reach a front line position did not necessarily classify one as a really topflight star-gazer. He must have taste and the knowledge of what to cheer.
“I never made the mistake of asking a bit player for an autograph in my entire career,” he said, “but only in my recent and most successful years have I cured my weakness for snatching mementoes from a person whose option had not yet been take up. I now concentrate solely on those stars who have long-term contracts.” Last night I had the opportunity of watching Mr. Ney in action when I attended the opening of the Mae West-W. C. Fields picture. His every movement bore the stamp of a champion,
