Terry is Wiser Prophet Than !. He Was in ’39

Refuses to Predict What Giants Will Do

By DANIEL °°

: Times Special Writer: NEW YORK, Feb. 6.—Fourteen _ months ago, in his ecstacy and exuberance over amazing demonstra-

tions by the newly acquired Zeke].

Bonura, Bill Terry shouted that the 1939 Giants were the most adroit, agile and astonishing baseball players it had been his pleasure to manage. However, by Aug. 1 Memphis Bill had found his athletes rather depressing. A wiser and less venturesome prophet was Terry today. Asked if he had any more breath-taking prognostications, the pilot of the Polo Grounds replied, “I haven't the faintest notion how my club will fit into the coming race. I don’t know where it will finish. I have come to the conclusion that only the rash man makes predictions, and that all ball clubs are question marks. Depending on King Carl

“Much depends on Carl Hubbell. I believe he will win 18 games. From Hal Schumacher I expect 15 games. Cliff Melton, who is to be converted into a change-of-pace pitcher; Harry Gumbert and Bill Lohrman complete my staff of five starters. Paul Dean, Walter Brown and Roy Joiner will work out of the bullpen. “What’s wrong with that pitching staff? Who, with the exception of the Cardinals, has a beter one?” Reminded that he had ignored Manuel Salvo, Terry replied: “I am not going to count on him until he shows he can win in the National League.”

| ‘Reds in For Trouble

“The Cardinals will be the toughest club in the league. They have pitching and punch and the best balance. The Reds are going to have plenty of trouble. Gabby Hartnett, Doc Prothro and I tried to impress that on Bill McKechnie : yesterday, but he would not believe us. Cincinnati definitely is a onetime winner, “Once past the Cards and the Reds, we run into a scramble. Despite a bad-looking pitching staff, Frankie Frisch has a club with strong possibilities in Pittsburgh. If Prank can get it to hustle and fight, it could make a lot of trouble.” Asked if he had a trade in sight, Terry replied in the negative. “The Phillies have been trying to get Bonura from me but all they offer "is a playerswhom we do not want, and a ridiculously small cash consideration. We are going to make the fight with what we have, and that means Babe Young at first base; Nick Witek at second, Bill Jurges at short, and Glen Stewart, Lou Chiozza or Alban Glossop around titird. “In the outfield, it will be Mel Ott, Frank Demaree and Joe Moore again.” Not Counting on Zeke

The conversation returned to Bonura. “Zcke does not like the contract we have sent him, and imagines a lot of major clubs would like his services,” Terry went on. “He called me up in Memphis the other day, and after shocking him with the information that only the Phillies wanted him—and not very enthusiastically, at that—I told him that if he could make a deal for himself he would find our club very decent about it. “I might carry Zeke, but I am not counting on him. He is one of those rugged individualists, and while he does not drink, smoke or disregard training rules, he is very hard to handle. I don’t like that kind of ball players, especially if he has mechanical shortcomings.”

Butler’s Cagers Trip Wisconsin

Butler’s basketball team—that is, what's left of it—returned home today after toppling Wisconsin, 50-46, and prepared to meet Northwestern here Thursday night. Last night's encounter was: the second of three Big Ten tilts for the Bulldogs in six days. They lost to Ohio State, 51- -45, last Saturday night. Despite a shut-in list that includes four injured players, two sick ones and three ineligible ones, Butler held off a last-half Wisconsin rally to win. Butler led, 28 to 20, at the half. Badgers Get Hot

The Badgers unfurled a secondperiod rally that accounted for 15 points in 10 minutes, leveling the score at 35-all. The count was tied again at 37 and 39 before Wilbur Schmuacher tipped in a two-pointer to put Butler anead. Lester Combs then dropped in two field goals, Byron Gunn added one and a free throw and John Petrie hit from close range. Wisconsin carried on during the game without the services of four players. Gene Englund, Wisconsin’s leading Big Ten scorer, was overshadowed by Combs, former Broad Ripple High School graduate, who connected for 13 points, the first time he had scored this season. Gunn followed with 11. ‘Schumacher and James McCray each garnered eight. Jerry Steiner, Butler captain, who has moved up into the All-America ranks, is still recovering from the flue and is not expected to play against the Wildcats Thursday. His teammate, Bob Dietz, having recovered from a cold, may see some action. Summary of last night’s game: Butler 30). Wisconsin £49),

in the first round fast week.

A study of the list of TimesLegion Golden Gloves survivors probably will convince Indianapolis sports goers they can’t afford to miss the leather tossing in the tournament's fourth show at the Armory Friday night. None of the 1939 Open class champions has been knocked off yet and there will be heavy firing in that popular division this week, along with the usual entertaining performance by'the Novice gladiators. The fistic bill stacks up as a bargain attraction since the young knuckledusters have had sufficient training by this time to go the three-round distance ‘at top speed.

String of Knockouts Knockouts in the first three shows-surpassed the dynamiting of other years and if this trend continues the eighth annual TimesLegion event will set a local record. It is planned to run off 30 bouts Friday and the warfare will get under way not later than 7:30. There will be no advance in ticket prices over last week’s session. Reserved seats, consisting of ringside chairs and the first row in the balcony, are priced at $1 and the pasteboards are on sale now at Haag’s Claypool Hotel drugstore. General admission tickets at 50 cents will be available at the Armory at 6 p. m, Friday. The complete list of tournament eligibles: OPEN CLASS —112 Pounds— William Cummings, | Leeper Boxing
