~NEW YORK, Feb. 3.—We are doing very nicely in the United States —Iland of the free. Over in Russia, which is a dictatorship, calls itself
a dictatorship and does not even pretend to be in love with democracy, they make short shrift of people who disagree with the fundamental principles of communism. Communism is a world apart from capitalism. A man who advocates capitalism is supposed to be necessarily in favor of overthrowing communism. So they chase him out of Russia or throw him in jail or | stand him against a wall. And what do we do over here? Well, at the present writing the Fascist leader, Mr. Kuhn, and the Communist leader, Mr. Browder, are both in jail or on their way there. I do not know that Russia has anything on us, therefore, in this contest. She puts her capitalist critics and advocates in jail or exiles them. We put our Communist and Fascist leader in jail. What 1s the difference? : » ” ® NOW THERE IS A HUE and cry for the head of Father Coughlin, Father Coughlin, with his Christian Front, is just about as dangerous an agitator as we have in the United States. He has become a merchant of hatred. And there are plenty “more. And so now men are calling for his arrest. Put him away with Kuhn and Browder. : It really doesn’t sound like America. It particularly doesn’t sound ' like the thing that made America most different from Russia ai Germany. And it is only the beginning. : The war psychosis is with us. We have been aroused by stories of spies, tales of submarines on our
coasts, fears of invasions, clamors|,
for more battleships and soldiers— down with the Communists, the Fascists, the Christian Front. The trouble is that when we start this sort of thing no man can say where it will end. J 2 ” ONE THING WE KNOW, and that is that it will not remain stationary. It is down with the Fas-
cists and Communists today. To-|C
morrow it will be down with something else. It is an old disease. History is full of examples of how it spreads and poisons the mind. Now that Kuhn and Browder have bitten the dust, maybe this is a good time to pause and take thought and ask ourselves if we have not gone far enough. : ~ We are now actually engaged in the purest form of flattery—imitation. We are imitating Stalin and Hitler. If it is all right for us to throw our Communist and Fascist leaders in jail, why is it not all right for Stalin and Hitler to throw their capitalist and democratic believers in jail? We may be democratic and they may be totalitarian, but now we are alike in at least one thing—that those that attack our system in its fundamentals are liable to suppression by force. I do not like to see us come that close to them in resemblance.
GRAIN PRICES DIP ON SNOW PROSPECT
CHICAGO, Feb. 3 (U. P.).—Prospects of snow or rain over the weekend carried wheat prices off as much as 11% cents on the Chicago Board of Trade today. Other grains dipped fractionally. Wheat closed off 3% to 2 cent with the May future at 963. @7%. Corn was off %4@% cent, May 547 @55. Oats unchanged to off 5

Soybeans closed 1 to % cent lower, May $1.04%. Moderate selling, mostly by professional traders, erased yesterday’s gains in wheat. By UNITED PRESS
Stocks were steady in light trading today at New York. Special issues again provided the features. Bonds were dull with prices mixed. Cotton eased after a firm
start. Wheat and corn declined.
News available marketwise tended toward the unfavorable, especially affecting the steel industry. The latter brought small recessions into steel issues. For next week, leading steel centers are planning drastic curtailment of operating schedules. Automobile issues, rails, utilities and rubbers had small gains. Aviations perked up on news heavy new orders for planes were coming in. Coppers were firm but dull and a few trades brought minor gains to mercantile shares. Oils were mixed in a narrow area. Curtiss-Wright featured in volume and made a small gain. Wright Aero on a few transactions jumped more than $2. : : Utility common stocks for the most part were fractionally higher. American Telephone rose slightly on the Bell System report of a 94 400-station gain in January, the largest in two years. Volume continued light in the main list and near the closé a majority of issues held minor gains.

"6O0D MUSIC" | By James Thrasher |
For the Chopin admirer, the presence of Alexander Brailowsky upon the musical scene is Joaswmins. It, seemed for a time that the Chopin “specialist” was passing with the older generation of pianists which included (or includes) such artists as de Pachmann, Paderewski, Rosenthal and Hofmann. But Mr. Brailowsky, who is soloist on tomorrow's New York Philhar-monic-Symphony Orchestra broadcast, is one of the latter day virtuosos who devotes a good bit of his time and attention to the Polish master. His tolr de force along this line is the series of Chopin recitals which he has given with considerable success in | New York, Brussels and Buenos Aires. In this series of six performances he plays all of the 164 piano of Chopin. No mean feat, that, | ‘Tomorrow, however, Mr. Brailowsky will content himself with the piano part of Chopin's .E Minor Concerto, Opus 11. Preceding his performance, John Barbirolli will give his audience the rather rare privilege of hearing the Overture to Berlioz’ “Beatrice and Benedict.” This excerpt is from one of Berlioz’ four almost forgotten operas, none of which achieved any great measure of popular esteem. On the program’s second half will be heard a Rondo for Orchestra! by Eugene Zador and the Suite | from Rimsky-Korsakov's “Le Coq! d'Or.” Mr. Zador is a former pro-! fessor in conservatories at Vienna and Budapest who recently established residence in New York. His Czardas Rhapsody was heard on the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s most .recent popular concert. ” o » 3 ‘To mark the end of his stay as the NBC Symphony Orchestra's guest conductor, the Italian maestro, Bernardino Molinari, will pre- ’ » » »

music, will be aided in his crusad-
ing work tomorrow by Erho Rapee, who has programmed the English composer’s “Two Aquarelles,” at 11 a. m. on NBC-Blue.
These pieces originally wér written to be sung without words |
by an unaccompanied chorus. Later,
during the years of Delius’ blindness, they were transcribed for string orchestra with the help of the composer's amaunuensis, Eric Fenby, ‘Also on tomorrow’s Radio City Music Hall program will be four movements of a Bach Suite, Schoenberg’s “Verklaerte Nacht,” and solos by Lucille Lawrence, harpist, and Jan Peerce, tenor.
-
» ” » Contestants on tomorrow's “So You Think You Know Music” (1:30 p. m.,, CBS) will be the composer, Charles Wakefield Cadman, and Walter Slezak, singing star of “I Married an Angel.” .., Grace Moore is to be tomorrow night's soloist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Franco Ghione on their CBS-WFBM hour. Miss Moore will sing,” among other things, “Depuis le jour” from Charpentier's “Louise.” Which ought to be the cue to remark that Miss Moore recently starred in a French film version of the opera. ;
