IS IT "TRUE what they say about Greenwood ? That was the question we popped at Jean Bradnick of the Franklin Star, a fellow who's on the best of terms with - Johnson County basketball. Could we expect Greenwood to ~ preserve its string of 14 victories? Just how far did he think our neighbors south on U. S. 31 would go in the tour- - naments? That's what we

“They’re everything folks
are - saying,” Bradnick reported. “Not the sort of playmates, naturLy. for teams like South Side or ashington, but tough enough in their own class. The team, as you know, is built around Herbert, a center definitely on the smooth side. And he gets able support from the other four. Greenwood’s substitutes run more to the gradeschool size, but they've shown they can get up and romp when the second alarm comes in. “Of course, Fuzzy Vandivier builds his Franklin teams to hit their peak near the end of February. Then there's that record the Grizzlie Cubs have to uphold — you know, never a sectional loser. Seriously, though, the Franklin fans are worried.” “They should be.” The gentleman who had taken the floor was Coach Claude Weeks of the Masonic Home. “I can’t speak for Greenwood, but Fuzzy had better look out for our boys. George Crowe was all that saved them last year after we had taken care of GreenWood. We'll be tough again this year.” “Or next,” put in Bradnick. “All of Claude's first five will be back,” he explained. Mr. Weeks wanted to add a word about thé basketball enthusi“You've never heard anything like the rooting of the boys out there. The team’s confident, too. Big floors,

BACK JIN THE 1934-35 season Coach | Janis P. (Hunk) PFrancis|Ti thought he had a pretty fair basketball team. The Jeffersonville home folk thought so, too, and in time Indiana agreed. That team, which included such - lads as Bill Johnson, Ernie Andres and bby Thompson, finished its regular schedule undefeated and moved into the sectional. Nobody could stop the Red Devils there and. ney flavansed to the regional. But all the while wise guys were popping out of dressing room doorways with that. old reminder: “An
unbeaten team never wins the s.
Hunk and his Red Devils as they romped into the Butler Fieldhouse and into the final game. But there they fell, after 30 straight victories, before Archie Chadd’s Anderson Indians, 23-17.
Francis’ door all along began to howl for blood now. They . said Francis had failed to coach the team properly during the title game and eventually swayed Hunk’s staunch supporters. Francis was given his walking papers. His next stop was at Windfall (pop. 734), where his teams immediately revealed his old touch. Then up a step to neighboring Elwood. Last week his club defeated South Side of Ft. Wayne, 28-26, which is no mean feat when you consider South Side still is ranked No. 1 in Indiana by most observers. It has been a brilliant comeback for Hunk. And you can’t blame him if he smiles with vengeance at the Jeffersonville clique which outmaneuvered him and his friends five years ago. . 8 8 =

tion. Both have been recognized as champions of the world in New York State. Both measure 32 inches around the waist. Both have taken a couple of lickings from - light heavyweight champion Billy Conn. Both still have ambitions of beating Conn. That’s what the Apostoli-Bettina return scrap is all about. They are fighting to decide which will get a shot at the 175-pound. title. Promoter Mike Jacobs has promised the winner a championship match against the winner of the ConnGus Lesnevich title affair in Miami Feb, 28. Jacobs hasn't decided the site of the winner vs. winner bout yet, but the odds are that it will be staged at Detroit in March. Crowe counted 17, Weber, 15 and Brenneman, 13. Valparaiso led, 29 to 28, at the half, and the score was tied at

brother freshman, Don Saylor, sank fielders to pull the Greyhounds through. w= St. Josephs Stars Early St. Josephs started early against Illinois Weslyean and led until only fwo minutes remained in the first half. Then the invaders looped two quick field goals to take a 21 to 17 edge at the intermission. The Pumas trailed for many minutes after the game resumed but finally squeezed out a 38 to 37 lead with three minutes to go. At that juncture, Hoffman counted his fourth bucket of the night to put it on ice. Hoffman scored 11 points for the winners while Anderson was high for Wesleyan with 10 counters.
