JURY RENEWS "PROBE OF WPA

Congressional Investigators ‘Scheduled to Testify On Findings.

Dr. Carleton B. McCulloch, veteran Democratic leader, today appeared before the special Federal Grand Jury investigating ‘alleged WPA irregularities in the Southern Indiana District.

{Other witnesses included, John| §

Newhouse, Marion County Commissioner; Clarence I. Wheatley, former County Commissioner, and WPA state office employees and officials. The jury reconveaed today after being in recess sidce Jan. 19 so that WPA division of Tl agents could complete cases they were working on. u. . the 22 jurors would consider nothing but alleged WPA irregularities. For the first time two Congressional investigators, who have been here since last summer, were scheduled to appear before the jury. They are George J. Shillito and Matthew J. Connelly, agents of the Woodrum subcommittee. Since the call of the jury Mr. Nolan has declined to comment on specific cases which would be pre‘sented the jurors. However, it was learned before the recess that evidence was given them on the extension of Ritter Ave. from Southeastern Ave. northward through Rolling Acres and extension of Maynard Ave. through a field near the Southport High School Stadium. Mr. Nolan declined to say what the Grand Jurors would begin working on today, saying that he

was bound to the same secrecy the A

jury members are. The WPA Division of Investigation agents between last’ summer and now have been probing these projects: A sewer in Homecroft, subdivision near Southport, extension of Barth Ave. and Grube St. through privately owned land for subdivision, the $6,000,000 White River flood control project and construction of Cold Springs Drive (also called Claypool Road) -off Cold Springs Road south of 62d St. :

UNITY STRESSED BY BISHOP LOWE

Must Be Provision for All Sects, He Tells Church Conference.

Methodist Bishop Titus Lowe of Indianapolis presented to 300 Indiana pastors and churchwomen today “a practical example of how church unity can be achieved.” ' Speaking at the ninth annual In-

diana Pastors’ Gonference and the 11th annual convention of the Indiana Council of Churchwomen meeting jointly in the First Baptist Church, Bishop Lowe said: “I may say emphatically and as

"|a member of one of the Christian

communions that I am voting 100 per cent plus for church unity.”

Gives His Recipe The basis of such unity, he said,

. |must be “unity in spirit, unity in

supreme loyalties, unity in goals, and diversity in operation.” ° This he gave as his recipe for a practical co-operation. “There must be an abundance of room for Gen. Booth’s drum and . +» for the organ notes of St. Paul's. Cathedral,” he said. “The trouble with most inter-denomina-tions conferences is the unconscious assumption on the part of many who come together that the other

Moss, secretary of the Foreign Missions Conference of America. “In every aspect of the church, co-operation is essential to advance,” he said. “It is high time Christians forgot their traditional antipathies. THREE MEN FREED IN KIDNAPING HOAX

Three men held by police in connection with a 19-year-old youth's fantastic tale of a kidnap plot, subsequently admitted to be false, were freed today by Municipal Court Judge Charles Karabell. Judge Karabell, however, declined to release the youth whose story caused the others’ arrests and continued his’ case until Feb. 21 for further investigation. : He was Dayne Leon Hail, 19, of 421 S. Alabama St. charged with conspiracy to commit a felony. Police said they first were informed of the alleged plot by Miss Edna Wright, 18, of 242 N. Davidson St., who said Hail told her he had been “hired” by Charles Whitney, 825 Broadway, a City employee, to kidnap her and her mother, Mrs. Rose Wright. Hail was arrested and told police, they said, that Mr. Whitney had given him $75 cash and promised another $75 if he would have Mrs. Wright and her daughter out of town on the trial date for a board bill suit he said had been filed by Mrs. Wright against Mr. Whitney.

ward Ficklin, 131 Herman St., were arrested when Hail said he had employed them to help him. Then, under intensive questioning, police said, Hail admitted the whole story was false, and that he had told it to impress his girl friend, Miss Wright. ~ In dismissing Mr. Whitney and the Ficklin brothers, Judge Karabell told Hail he had committed a “most dastardly act in falsely accusing and injuring the reputation” of the three others. . In ordering Hail held in jail, the judge said he wasn’t convinced the youth had told the entire truth about his reasons for making the false accusation.
