Jive Fans Win Music Box Fight
PORTALES, N. M.. Jan. 25 (U. P.).—Peace, of a fashion, returned to Portales today. The * juke boxes” —nickey record players—had been restored to the New Mexico Junior College jitterbugs. Answering complaints that the canned jive was disturbing residents, the City Council three weeks ago drew an old anti-dancing ordinance from the town’s archives. The record players were banned. The Junior Collegians said the rule was unjust, “a violation of civil liberties.” Pressure was brought on Mayor Frank Howard and he promised to investigate. He found that the anti-dancing ordinance had been repealed in 1934.
