Scarcest| In Farm Belt
This finding [plays havoc with one notion that has been cherished by some political observers — namely that the chief habitat of the elusive _ Independent was the same farming
areas that produced the Minnesota Farmer-Labor |Party or the Wisconsin Progressives. - On the contrary, the survey shows, independents are scarcest in the farm belts of the Middle West and South. Especially in the South. Here, where e tradition of the “solid South” | still remains very - strong, only ahout one voter in 10 considers himself an independent today, the survey shows, and the great majority| (70 per cent) call
ocratic strategists . however] is the fact that 20 per cent of the voters in the 13 Southern states consider themselves Republicans at this time. Further Institute surveys in months to come will reveal whether this
Republicans haope, or whether the South will continue to be the happy hunting grounds of the Democrats only.

mission includes: Mrs. William H. Schlosser of Franklin, state Daughters of the Revolution regent; Thomas McCullough of Anderson, Daily Bulletin editor and prominent Democratic leader; Dr. Ross F. Lockridge, New Harmony Memorial Commission chairman; = Stephen Noland, editor of The Indianapolis News, and J. Russell Townsend Jr., Indianapolis Junior Chamber of Commerce president. Both the D. A. R. and the Junior Chamber of Commerce have been active in supporting the project for a memorial to the Hoosier President. Mrs. Schlosser recently presented a portrait of Mrs. Caroline Scott Harrison, the President’s wife and first national D. A. R. regent, to the society’s Constitution Hall in Washington. Previous to the enactment of the bill creating the commission and appropriating $2500 for its expenses, it was hinted that the memorial might take the form of a park nortl.

The magazine is the official publication of the United States Chamber of Commerce. In the Jannaty issue, Mr. Thorpe wrote an editorial in which he concluded that after 10 years we are no better off economically. In the same issue there appeared an advertisement by the Association of American Railroads stating:
