WEDNESDAY, JAN. Big Doin’s Today on Ring Row
Four Developments Awaited; Jacobs Due to Sign for Miami Bout.
By JACK CUDDY United Press Staff Correspondent
NEW YORK, Jan. 17.—Everyone was up early and chipper on Anesthesia Avenue today, ready for big doin’s which were expected to include: 1 Completion of negotiations between Mike Jacobs and Miami, Fla., officials for a charity bout there in late February. 2. Decision by the New York Boxing Commission on the fate of Joe’ Jacobs, which means ‘the fate of the proposed Tony Galento-Maxie Baer scrap in New. York. 3. Arrangements by the New - York Commission for some sort of an elimination tournament among lightweight contenders to determine a challenger for champion Lou Ambers. 4. Formal signing of commission contracts for the Armstrong-Mon-tanez welterweight championship Aght next Wednesday night and for the Louis-Godoy heavyweight title tilt on Feb. 9. Promoter Mike Jacobs declined to discuss the Miami porposition with reporters, but it was believed to concern a Sunday afternoon bout in Miami, probably with Billy Conn defending his light heavyweight title against the winner of the Feb. 2 return match between Fred Apostoli and .Melio Bettina. Because of the Miami night life and night dog races, Mike insists upon a Sunday afternoon date.

Wait O.K. on Detroit Sale
DETROIT, Jan. 17 (U. P.)— Transfer of the Detroit Lions professional football team to three young sportsmen by owner Dick Richards today awaited only the approval of the National Football League, which js expected within a
week. Richards, 50 and in ill health, sold for $200,000 the franchise that cost him $15,000, to Fred L. Mandel Jr., Chicago, Anthony I (Tony) Owen and Charles Chaplin of New York. It was only six years ago that Richards picked up the Portsmouth, O., franchise, and moved it to Detroit, where it became one of the most profitable in the league. For the past three years Richards has had to remain in California for his health and direct the team by]. telephone and wire. He said he sold the team “with deep regret” on doctors’ orders. : The new owners said George (Potsy) Clark, who coached the Lions to the national title in 1935, would return as head coach. Clark’s contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers expired after last season. Chaplin, an executive of the New York Giants for several years, plans to live in Detroit, and Mandel, who has retired from active duty in the Chicago department store ,which bears his name, will live h bout six months of the year. Formal transfer of the franchise to the new owners must await a two-thirds vote of the other clubs in the league, but there is no doubt that the sale will be approved since league president Carl Storck helped arrange and gave his approval to the deal.
