BACKBOARD!

By. TOM OCHILTREE

IT MAY have been good enough for your pappy, but no one seems to be satisfied any more with the old style basketball backboard. There have been suggestions to abolish it completely or to substitute a concave board, and now Branch McCracken, Indiana University coach, comes forward to propose a “streamlined” board.

Why not? We have stream-

fined women’s hats, radiatcrs, razors and pneumatic drills. Like cellophane, streamlining seems to be here to stay. Reasoning that there is no need for a board of the present size, Coach McCracken contends that a smaller board would increase the range of vision for spectators in the end seats, and would cut down on the strategy of firing away in the general direction of the basket in the hope that some giant on the team will drop in a rebound shot. Coach McCracken would reduce the board in height from four to three and a half feet and in width from six to five feet. It would have’ beveled edges and no corners, and would be slightly oval in shape. The heop would be set at the bottom of the board instead of six inches above it as it now does. The last suggestion regarding the hoop is designed to keep tail players from bumping their heads when there are scrambles under the bas-, ket. There must be some fire with all this smcke. Maybe the backboards will be radically revised within the next few years.

THE FOURTH annual Falls City Invitational tournament is to be held at Pendleton High School Saturday. Teams from Middletown, Lapel, Markleville and Pendleton are io participate. Second teams ‘are to play at 9:30 and 10:30 a. m. with the finals in that division at 7 p.- m, and the varsity squads are to compete at 2 and 3 p. m. with the title struggle scheduled for 8 p. m. ” » ” PUPILS IN Marion County high schools located outside the City limits are all steamed up over the 21st annual county tournament which opens Thursday night at the Ben Davis High School gym.

Admitting that city high school rooters make plenty ¢¢f noise at games, the Indianapolis fans still don’t have any edge over the county school partisans when it comes to cheering. Defending titleholders this time are the Southport Cardinals, who down through the years have compiled the best record of any of the schools competing in this event. Eight times the Cardinals have waltzed off with top laurels and they threatened in most of the others.

Before. Valley Mills and West Newton were consolidated into Decatur Central they won three ‘crowns between them, and after the union Decatur Central was able fo win three more. Ben Davis has won the title three times, Warren Central twice and Beech Grove once.

LJ » 2

TIP INS: Coach Jim/ Adams of Whiting was confined to his home by illness recently, but he is back on the job now. , . . The Wildcats of Hammond are another team that drive the fans crazy. In five conference tilts they won once by two points, lost once by three points and three times by two points. Any way you take it that is running into plenty of tough luck. ... Martinsville is losing McCormick pretty soon because of the age limit, and it looks as though the Artesians are going tc miss gone.

No Yankee Jobs Open, Says Pilot

McCarthy Planning to Use Same Lineup During Coming Season.

By GEORGE FIRKSEY United Press Staff Correspondent NEW ¥ORK, Jan. 16.—The old American League war cry of “break up the Yankees” may be heard from a new quarter this spring at St. Petersburg, Fla., training base of the world champions. Instead of the other clubs leading the chant against the Yankees, it'll be the Yankee rookies themselves yelling for a chance to break into the lineup. Surveying the New York ‘roster for 1940, Marse Joe McCarthy, only pilot ever to win four consecutive world championships, opined today there wouldn't be any changes in the Yankee lineup for the coming season. They're Stil! 0. K.

“There are no jobs open on the Yanks,” said McCarthy, here to confer ‘vith President Ed Barrow about Yankee plans. “But, of course, you never can tell what’ll happen to a ball player during the winter. From present indications the Yankees will start the season with the same club that we used against Cincinnati in the World Series.” > Asked if he thought the Yankees would be stronger in 1940 than they've ever been, McCarthy said: “We won 106 games last year and had a pretty good club. And we were good in 1938, too. If we can have a club in 1940 as strong as those two years I'll be satisfied.” McCarthy does not agree with some Yankee critics that some of their veteran players may be wearing out and getting ready to go down the hill. Expects Keller to Click |

“Red Ruffing had a sore arm part of last year,” said McCarthy, “but he’s had that before. His arm was all right in the World Series and from the way he pitched against the Reds I'd say Ruffing has nothing to worry about. There's nothing wrong with Lefty Gomez’ arm and at times last year he had as much stuff as ever. It’s just a question of Lefty getting off to a good start. If he does, he'll have a big year. “Bill Dickey isn't wearing out. I think he has the build to last a long time because he’s big and strong.” Improvement in Charlie Keller, the Yanks’ sensational rookie of last year, and Marius Russo, young southpaw who joined the club in mid-season, is expected by McCarthy this season.
