CHAIN STORES LETTER STUDIED
Right to ‘Accept Relief Orders Asked by Kroger, A&P and Standard.
‘Henry Mueller, Center Township ‘Trustee, had under consideration today the requests of three chain grocery firms for the right to accept relief food orders. Mr Mueller said his answer to the requests would be delayed, however, until he could take care of the coal needs of relief clients in the subzero cold. Three major chains—the Kroger Grocery & Baking Co. the Great tlantic & Pacific Tea Co. and the tandard Grocery Co. — made requests yesterday.
Point to Costs
All three firms called attention to the fact that they were large Center Township taxpayers and were in “position to furnish meats and groceries for Center Township relief at the lowest possible cost.” “Good sound principles of our
“American form of Government, not
to mention the moral phases, should compel any government official charged with that responsibility to
- minister to the needy in a strictly
fair and impartial manner and it is with a keen sense of appreciation that we note your intention to do so,” John A, Lindgren Jr., A. & P. vice president wrote. “Giving the relief client complete freedom of choice among all legitimate merchants guarantees the government, the taxpayer and the relief client the most for their money by the natural operation of competitive forces. We ask no special privilege and speak on behalf of all other merchants as well who desire to fill relief orders.”
Reforms Commended
A. W. Metzger, Kroger official, wrote: : “I am glad to commend the steps that have been taken thus far to clear up this undesirable situation, I have noted that many relief clients and the public also, as indicated in newspaper articles, editorials and elsewhere, are urging that favoritism be definitely eliminated. . . Competition wéuld cause the relief families to receive the largest possible amount of food and other necessities for the tax dollar spent
in their behalf.” |
Chester H. Jackson of the Standard Grocery Co. called attention to the fact that his firm has been in business here for more than 40 years. “In view of what has happened in the past, we feel that we should be considered as a source of supply for township poor relief as we are in position te furnish merchandise at the lowest possible cost to the taxpayers, and we urge that you accept our stores on the basis of letting the clients decide for themselves at what store the order should ~ be placed,” Mr. Jackson wrote.
Car Breaks Ice, S Youths Saved
ELKHART, Ind, Jan. 5 (U. P.). —Five Elkhart boys were recovering from exposure suffered yesterday when their car broke through ice on Mud Lake near here as they drove across the surface. The car sank until only its top was visible. Rescued were Bob Sanderson, Bill, Ben (and Bob Melvin and Jack Kreighbaum.
DEATH OF BRIDE, 26, RULED ACCIDENTAL
SOUTH BEND, Ind, Jan. 5 (U. P.) —Deputy Coroner Samuel E. Bechtold today returned a verdict of accidental death in the case of Mrs. Rex Smith, 26-year-old bride of six weeks whose body was severed by a South Shore interurban passenger car near here Dec. 27. Robert G. Carpenter, 21, who has been in custody since last Saturday after he admitted being with her within a few moments of her death, was released. Carpenter told authorities he met Mrs. Smith at a tavern, took her for a brief ride and
" escorted her from| his car near the
death scene when she refused to go home. A lie detector test taken at the Indianapolis State Police Headquarters substantiated Carpenter’s story. Mr. Bechtold said today he had positive proof that Mrs. Smith, who had been married four times, had taken a dozen straight drinks of liquor within two and a half hours before she was killed.
