I SHIDELER TRIAL OPENS MONDAY
; Former Broker Faces Fraud Charges on Which Father Went to Prison.
The Federal Court trial of william A. Shideler, Indianapolis investment broker, will open at 9:30 a. m. Monday. Mr, Shideler was indicated Sept. 20, 1939, on a charge of violation of the Securities Act and using the mails to defraud. He will be tried by a jury before Federal Judge Thomas W. Slick of South Bend. Judge Slick was appointed by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals after Robert C. Baltzell disqualifled himself. :
Changed Plea : Mr. Shideler changed his plea of guilty to not guilty on Oct. 6, 1933, His father, Frederick W. Shideler, pleaded guilty to the sams charges and was sentenced on Sept. 25 to seven years in prison and was fined $5000. He was committed to Leavenworth Penitentiary on Oct. 27. | The younger Shideler changed his blea without consulting his attorney, George R: Jeffrey, who immediately withdraw from the case. Julian C. Ryer of Chicago will represent Mr. Shideler. The Shidelers. were accused of mishandling investors’ funds and were already under bond when indictments were returned by the arion County Grand .Jury Nov. 4, 1938, charging them with embezzlement, grand larceny and false pretense. They have not been tried yet on the County indictments. Nolan Charges Fraud . A few weeks before the County Grand Jury returned its indictments, the Shidelers, officials of Shideler & Co., were arrested on affidavits signed by the S te Securities Commission. =e

Six speakers are on the program of the 43d annual convention of the Indiana Association of Optometrists
Monday. They are Dr. C. W. Rutherford, Indianapolis; Dr. Glenn A. Fry, School of Optometry, Ohio State University; Dr. M. A. Julian, Better Vision Institute, New York City: Dr. Marguerite Thoma, Milwaukee,
Wis.; Dr. Irvine Lueck, Rochester, N. Y,, and Dr. W. B. Needles, president of the Northern Illinois College of Optometry, Chicago. Special meetings and luncheons will be held during the two-day session. The annual business meeting, with the election of officers, will be held Monday morning. A banquet and dance Monday night will close the convention. Officers of the association include Dr. B. H. Kaplan, Michigan City, president; Dr. W. L. Van Osdol, Indianapolis, second vice president: Dr. A. C. Anderson, Ft. Wayne, sec-retary-treasurer, and Dr. J. P. Davey, Indianapolis, a= member of the executive committee. -
ESTATE TURNED OVER TO SLAYING SUSPECT
CLINTON, Ind. Jan. 5 (U. P.).— Mrs. Mabel Houston of St. Bernice, who allegedly confessed to slaying her husband, Daniel, last month, has been named administratrix of his estate by the Vermillion Circuit Court. Mrs. Houston,was freed on a $10,000 bond after preliminary hearing where she indicated on numerous occasions she had been beaten severely by her husband. ; . pl
