! IF — BURRIS of Muncie « basketball team ros its perforsans: of last season and makes it to the state finals again this time, it will be nice for Burris, of course, but
not particularly startling.
-- Last spring they were the big surprise team. But that is all over now. Every state basketball fan knows Burris i is
‘hotter than a fireman’s suspenders. If there were any stray skeptics left in this sec-
“tor ‘the exhibition Coach Scott “Fishers lads put up here last night
against Southport’s Cardinals was .
* & convincer in itself. : The Owls beat the Cardinals, 4% 27, before a crowd of some 1200
disappointed spectators. As the|
score indicates there wasn’t much to the thing. The Owls jumped away to a lead early in the first quarter and then kept pumping the ball through the basket with a nice regularity. Maywe things would have been different if Coach Doyal (Buck) « ‘Plunkitt had a few more Ed Schien--beins, For even in overwhelming ‘defeat, Schienbein, Southport’s hero ..of all sports, looked good. 2 = = THE GAME started off when
Schienbein on ‘a perfect screen play|
hit a field goal from inside the free throw circle. Then Bob McKenzie "looped in a long angling shot, his specialty, and counted another from underneath the hoop. From that point on, the Owls spent their time Widening the advantage. At the end of the "first quarter, Burris was ‘ahead, 11 to 6. The Owls at the half were in front 24 to 12, and at the three-quarter mark the scoreboard showed: Burris, 36; Southport, 17. The real hero was McKenzie. He led scoring raids against the Cardinals with all the spirit his Scotch _ ancestors. used in storming the strongholds of rival clans. His defensive play was almost as good, and - in the last minute of the game he was forced out because he had committed four personal fouls. According to the record books he had made seven baskets out of 18 shots, for the rather remarkable individual percentage of .431. He also counted one free throw. Schienbein, the losers’ “strong man,” also made seven field goals, but he took 26 shots to do it for .-a1 average of .269. also had one free throw. The Owls’ average was better than the’ Cardinals’. Burris made 17 field goals in 66 attempts as compared to the host school’s 12 out of 1. ® » 2 “ BURRIS’ CLIMB in the sports world in the last couple of years
.- has ‘been as remarkable as it has
been steady. The high school enrollment at this laboratory school is only - 200, yet it has developed strong teams in Muncie, a city so long dominated by Central.
ntly the boot is on the}
. other leg now, however. The boys at Muncie who should know, claim .Central has little reserve strength coming on for the next few seasons. They further predict that if the Bearcats don’t win the sectional this time they may be in for a long - cold spell. This is all a tty picture, but there is one ds '’k spot. The Owls aren't very tall and they aren't on defense. ie, proved that in a counter attack he lead in the fourth quarter : while McKenzie and Kirby were getting a brief rest on the bench. But weak defense or no, I've a feeling we'll be seeing the Owls _ around here again in March.
AFTER MY J Sl record last
week, I Ne should retire from : this picking busifiess and survey the whole scene with a calm detachment. At least that would be following the old vaudeville player’s . philosophy to. “Ie ave ‘em while you still are But there un oubtedly would be erities to stand up-and say that my . leaving the field now wasn’t cricket, ! but was, in fact, very grubby, don’t ou ka it is hard enough . now to fill: up this pillar of piffle ! without giving up such a stand-by
games to be played tomorrow night: "MANUAL OVER CATHEDRAL.

This illustrates how Missouri follows up shots. Guard No. 5 passes into Forward No. 1 and then goes on to screen for No. 1 as indicated. No. 1 passes to No. 2 who sets|HA up a post in the four circle and the pivot man returns to No. 1 breaking past. No. 1 then shoofs and cuts around to the right to follow up. : No. 5 after screening also goes in to follow up, as does the pivot man.
This gives the Tigers three men getting in quickly for rebound work.
