that were chosen on the list of artistic successes, “Dark Victory” and “Juarez.” Three actors generally conceded to have more than mere eye-ap-peal got the nod for excellence. | Clark Gable led the balloting. Paul Muni and Spencer Tracy trailed. Tyrone Power got only one vote. That put him in a class with Brian Aherne and Charles Boyer. Gene Lockhart, David Niven, Claude Rains and the late Alice Brady tied for the player in the best supporting role. Only one movie other than “The Women,’ was on both the “pest list” and the “box office list.” That was “Kentucky.” George Bernard Shaw's “Pygmalion,” generally accepted as an “arty” movie, didn’t make the “best list.” One of the managers said it was his best box office bet for the year.

” » ”

THE YEAR HELD a few surprises. Universal's “Mikado” died in the downtown house and then went into the neighborhoods to hold up ih magnificent fashion. “Love Affair,” thought to be a sure-hit downtown, didh® make much of a ripple outside the mile square. ® B®

THE ZARING THEATER held its annual Dick Case Memorial Thursday. About 800 orphans were entertained with the “Wizard

of Oz.” Each child received a bag of candy and a tangerine, . All the neighborhood houses will show special New Year's Eve shows, most of them with a new film at midnight or thereabouts. . . Starting Tuesday the Tacoma will go back to its old 6:30 p. m. week-day opening time, an hour later than at present, 4 ” ”
