Film Houses | Bill Extras’ To Greet '40
Lyric to Present Midnight Shows Both Saturday And Sunday.
All downtown first-run theaters and most of the neighborhood houses are prepared to celebrate a quiet Sabbath New Year's Eve with special showings scheduled for the early hours of 1940. In addition the Lyric will observe Saturday night's unofficial celebration with a midnight stage and screen show beginning at 11:30 p. m. The special Sunday night show is to begin at the same hour. Joe Cook, the Evansville comedian, heads the stage bill, and the picture is “The Cisco Kid,” with Cesar Romero and Marjorie Weaver.
Circle to Have New Bill
Of the downtown film places, only the Circle will have a brand new offering for the occasion. “The Great Victor Herbert” is scheduled to replace “Gulliver's Travels” (now in its second week) for Sunday night only. The Circle bill will change at 8 p. m. Sunday, with other showings of the Herbert picture at 10:05 p. m. and 12:05 a. m. Allan Jones and Mary Martin have the romantic leads, while Walter Connolly plays the title part. Loew's will show “Balalaika” (Nelson Eddy and Ilona Massey) which opened today, beginning at the New Year's deadline, and will follow it with a screening of “Blondle Brings Up Baby.”
Tce Show Scheduled
The Indiana and Apollo have booked continuous performances through the last day of 1939 and into 1940. Their attractions are “Swanee River,” with Don Ameche, Al Jolson and Andrea Leeds, teamed with “Two Thoroughbreds,” at the Indiana, and a single feature, Four | Wives,” at the Apollo. “Four!

Federal Judges Back Composers
LINCOLN, Neb, Dec. 29 (U. P) — A three-judge Federal Court yesterday held unconstitutional a Nebraska statute outlawing the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers through which song writers collect fees for the public use of their music. The opinion, written by U. S. Cir- | cuit Judge A. K. Gardner, Huron, | 8. D, held that two sections of the] state law conflicted with copyright authority vested in Congress. Dis- | trict Judges T. C. Munger and James A. Donahoe of Nebraska con- | curred. The Nebraska statute outlawed the society as a “price-fixing” combination of copyright owners to license public renditions for profit. Counsel for the state said they would appeal to the U. 8. Supreme Court.

the French film, “Grand Illusion.” He continued by saying that it had been marvelously directed. He then confessed that he had had some misgivings about being able to direct Von Stroheim, because the German has been a director himself and so probably has his own ideas about how each picture should be made. “But from your wonderful performance in ‘Grand Illusion’,” said Ratoff, brightly, “I can see that you take direction easily. So I guess we will not have any troubles.” “When I am an actor,” agreed Von Stroheim, “I do what the director tells me. But I guess you do not know that in ‘Grand Illusion’ I directed myself.”
” ” ” ON THE SET OF “IRENE,” Ray Milland and Allen Marshall were playing a hot game of table tennis, a sport at which neither actor needed a double.
Marsha Hunt entered the scene, watched the game a moment, then stared out at what was supposed to be Long Island Sound but really was a back drop on which danced the reflected light from a shallow tray of water, agitated by a prop man. She then went over to a portable phonograph and put on a record. Marshall quit his game and danced with her, but there was no music. The record was a dum-= my and the orchestra will be dubbed in later. But to keep them in rhythm, a director from the music department stood offstage and waved his arms.
On an outdoor street built for “At Good Old Siwash,” collegians of nearly 40 years ago strolled to and from their classes. Apparently it was a nippy autumn afternoon on the campus, but a blazing December sun was pouring down. Three stories high, on the eaves of the false front of a sorority house, perched two prop men, each with a bushel basket of dried leaves. Daintily they tossed leaves in front of electric fans, which wafted them gracefully into the

Bennett, the chauffeur, arrives with a sheaf of messages from the house and departs with orders. Personal maid, wardrobe woman and hairdresser—all regular employees of the star—bustle about. So does Miss Crawford's stand-in, who is her sister-in-law, Then an assistant director calls, “We're ready, Miss Crawford,” and out steps a ragged, dirty, disheveled creature with dispirited face. No lipstick, no eye shadow, no fashion-show posturings. Just a brownish makeup over everything. I don’t know how her feminine attendants keep so busy, unless they take turns pushing her into a portable swamp.
