BURYING NOT SERIOUS
AKRON, O., Dec. 28 (U. P).~It takes more than burying alive to keep Harlan Santee, 28, from his job on an excavation here. Santee was buried for 15 minutes. Firemen freed him and he soon was working again at his old job.

Unused 1939 intangibles tax stamps will be exchanged for 1940 stamps at face value by the State

Detective Sergeant John Robinson said the store’s inventory during the last few months had shown a shortage of about $400 of merchandise. Police searched Eisinger’s home and that of the young woman, now 22, and found several hundred dollars worth of
stolen goods, they said. They said Eisinger admitted stealing the merchandise from the store during the past five years.

Times Special PHILADELPHIA, Pa. Dec. 28.— The “back of the yards’ type of criminality is “pretty small potatoes” compared to the manipulations of the “white collar criminal.”
This is the conclusion of Dr. E. H. Sutherland, head of the Indiana University sociology department, who discussed “white collar criminality” in an address here last night at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Society.
‘White Collar’ Costs More
“Poverty and conditions allied with it alone do not breed crime,” he asserted. “White collar criminality is ‘real’ criminality, costing more financially and socially.” Dr. Sutherland declared that! “white collar criminality differs!|§ from lower class criminality prin-|
mplete Optical Service Savings to be effected by the City in gasoline costs next year through its newly inaugurated joint purchasing plan probably will result in extension of the plan to the buying of coal, oil and other commodities, City officials declared today. Joint bids for gasoline to be used by four departments will make possible a saving of more than $3000 a year, it is estimated. The bids were from .26 cent to 1.30 cents a gallon below the prices now being paid by the four departments. _Adjudged the lowest of 17 gasoline bids received, the bid of the Indian Refining Co. was withdrawn after the bids were opened. Company officials explained they had miscalculated in submitting estimates and had failed to follow City specifications. The Indian bid was 11.55 cents a gallon for regular and 12.55 cents for premium gasoline.
Blanket Bids Lower
The joint bidding plan was tried after the Indianapolis Times pointed out that City departments were paying different prices for gasoline of similar octane rating by receiving bids separately. Bidders yesterday submitted offers covering the individual requirements of the Works, Park, Safety and Health Boards and the joint requirements of all four Boards. In almost every case, the blanket bids covering the four departments were lower than the bids on the requirements of the departments individually.
