TUESDAY, DEC. 2, 16580 Blue Crawfish, Cannibal Bass Provided Some Thrills in 1939
Dam-Building Beavers Also Helped Keep Game Wardens in State Busy.
By JOE COLLIER TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: During 1939 blue crawfish were taken from one of 15 spring-fed ponds at Bass Lake to the bewilderment of crawfish fanciers who never before had seen blue ones. In an effort to discover what made them blue, the Department of Conservation transplanted young ones into others of the 15 pools and they grew up gray, as usual. The water of the ‘pool where they grew blue was compared chemically with water of the other pools and found to be the same, The blue crawfish were chemically compared to the gray ones and found to be the same. Nobody in the department ever heard of blue crawfish before, and nobody knows why they are blue. John Gottschalk, of the Fish and Game Department, says he's going to call in other experts. 5 » » FOR THE FIRST time in Indi ana's nature history, the Esox | masquinongy Ohiensis was defi- |} nitely identified as a resident. That's a muskie, which most fish- | § ermen believe inhabits only the | waters of the northern lake states. Wolves
