JANE JORDAN—

DEAR JANE JORDAN--My husband and I have been married more than three years and have a baby 15 months old. We haven't lived together since January, 1938. He lost his job here and went out of town to work, leaving me at my mother’s and father’s home. He very seldom sent me money, came home or even wrote, While my baby was small I stayed home and took care of him. When be grew older I got a job in a factory and worked up until about a month ago. Now my husband has a job here in town, but he also has a mother, sister and several other relatives who depend entirely upon ‘him to keep them, while my mother and father are. still Keeping me and the baby. Now there isn't one of my husband's family who are crippled, who cant work. They just don’t want to. His mother has two other sons who have their awn homes and want her to live with them, but she won't do it. If my husband would make a home for me, I would be more than glad for her to live with us, but he doesn’t want this and neither does she; so what shall IT do? I don't want a divorce. I love my husband and my baby needs a father, Help me if vou can. UNHAPPY AND UNDECIDED. » 5 n ” n n

Answer: You are right in expecting your husband to take care of his wife and child first and his family afterward, and if vou took your case to court you could get an allowance for the support of the baby. However, as a rule, litigation means the end of love, and what vou want more than money is a happy home with your husband. Therefore it seems worthwhile to have patience a while longer in the hope of finding some other way of awakening his feeling of responsibility toward you and the baby. I do not know how this can be done, If he sees the baby often enough his protective instincts may be stirred to the point of wanting to establish a home for him, but he will aveid visiting him if he knows that every time he comes he will have to face an emotional scene with you. However right you may be, wouldn't it be hetter for you to refrain from criticizing him until he has felt the tug of paternal love and had a chance to establish a relationship with his son? You could tell him how happy vou will be when the three of you are able to live together again, and express your confidence in his ability to bring this about in his own way. Instead of assailing his family for leaning on him, vou can try to understand the tie that holds him to his mother. Doubtless You have the same feeling toward your own mother and would find it difficult to leave her if she were dependent upon you. By your sympathy and understanding you may win him to your way of thinking when sterner methods have failed to produce results. Since you s¥ill love him and do not wish to antagonize him, I know of nothing else you ‘can do. JANE JORDAN,

LITTLE HENRY was afraid of street cars. He didn't like a whole mountain of people squeezing him and tramping on his toes. By the time he reached the city with its streets all black slush and car tracks, he was tired and cross. He had missed his nap so mother could take him in to see the toys and Santa Claus at the big store, “Oh, look, Darling, look at the lovely tree and all the prett lights up there.” Henry bent his small head the way mother was looking, to see the great tree three stories up, and Santa Claus and reindeer out lined in neon against the gray afternoon sky. But in his confusion it did not mean a thing to the little boy. The big lighted coffee pot to the right pouring red and blue coffee and flashing on and off looked funny. But it scared him. There was too much noise, and too much to see. People all looked like giants as they hurried by, and besides his mamma was hanging on to his hand till it hurt, “Come on, now. We're almost there, cry, and Santa will ask you what you want. good little boy. It's Christmas, honey, Christmas. Christmas.” Into the jammed store elevator next, He screamed. Mother said, “Shame on you, Henry Johnson. Don’t you know that Santa Claus doesn't like bad little boys? He'll hear you.”

” 8 ” » Yd ”

BY THIS TIME poor mother wes so very tired herself, and nervous, too, that she could have dropped. Off the elevator, at first, they seemed to be all right. But then all at once a big lion near them went “R-u-u-m-m-f.” And a thousand sounds beset the baby's ears. The clatter of electric trains, the stacatto of bicycle bells, and the sharp impact of missiles on a target. Things were up so high that mother had to lift the smal! figure to her shoulder. It was too much All Henry saw was piles of things that had a lot of color and made a lot of sound. Then there was a man in a red suit and a funny white thing on his chin. He had almost no face at all. Henry had never seen a beard. And before he knew it he was being wrenched away from his mother and this man was holding him. Henry became hysterical. Then he kicked and suddenly gave up his chocolate fudge lunch dessert, Santa Claus said kindly, “No matter, Madam. He is just a little scared.” At home again in his own safe, safe bed, Henry fell asleep. His mother ‘was recounting her disappointment to Henry's father. “I am afraid he is going to be a great coward,” she said.
