ITALY BASKS IN BUSINESS BOOM: |
EXPORTS oe
Duce Also Shopping Aboard; | Trade With Americas Shows Expansion.
ROME, Dec. 15 (U. P.).—Since war began three months ago, . has enjoyed an industrial which some economic ote viewed today as surpassing any pe- | riod since the tum of the 20th century, Italy's export gains are said by Fascists to be shown evervwhere by humming factories, scarcity of labor and a shortage of many kinds. of raw and half-finished goods. There is official reticence concerning! actual exportation figures which the newspaper, Giornale d'Italia, recent- | ly termed “a military secret.’ | Actually, the country’s problem at present, it is said, is not to get orders but to gear up the indus-| trial machine to fill them.

Japan Trade Falls
Foreign diplomatic circles report’ Italy has expanded her export trade! in South America, the United States, to most of the Balkan countries and, possibly to the belligerents. In contrast, Italv's trade ith] Japan has diminished. But it was announced that a new commercial company 1s being formed to co-| ordinate efforts of Italian importers) and exporters dealing in the Near and Far East in an effort to check Italy's diminishing trade with the Orient. It is known that Italy has been | shopping abroad as well as selling. Her object has been to amass large! stocks of supplies, such as gasoline, | which are considered necessary to economic independence—and her political independence—particularly during an European war.
Italy Paying Cash
Most of these products can be bought only for cash. The fact that Italy has had the money to pay for them apparently indicates she has been exporting in large quantities. Her only other source of foreign exchange—tourist business—has been! poor and, since the war began, virtually extinct, | Rayon is the biggest single export now. Close behind are other textiles, wine, leather, citrus fruits, sanitary and hospital instruments afd cheese. Exports of automobiles, machinery and other products requiring iron have been curtailed because Italy is frying to amass large stocks of iron herself, Two exceptions to this rule, it is said, are Hungary and Jugoslavia, which are importing many automobiles in connection with rearmament programs.
Sells Withovt Buying
An attractive feature to Italy of her increased trade with the Americas is that the free economy of nations with which she trades permits her to sell without buving. But her trade with the Balkans inevitably must be limited to the amount of goods Italy needs and which they can supply Reliable information on Italy's sales to belligerents is difficult to obtain. There are reports, however, that France is placing orders for an enormous number of army boots— perhaps 5.000.000 pairs—and that England is supplving raw wool to Italian factories which are turning out British army blankets and uniforms. Recently a mission of German Army officers from the Quartermaster Department arrived in Rome and was reported negotiating for the purchase of uniforms and similar equipment One point is established, however: Whatever Italy is selling the Allies, she is being paid for it, not only In cash—but in gold or gold-backed currency of non- belligerent nations. |
Next Sunday, ‘Finland Day’
i A PROCLAMATION declaring next Sunday as “Finland Day” in Indiana has been issued bv Gover-| nor M. Clifford Townsend. | “From the beginning of the Fin-| land Republic, there has existed a strong bond of affection between the Finnish people and the citizens of the United States,” the procla-| mation said. | “Today thousands of Finnish! families are endangered by war and are in grave need of food, clothing | and medical care.” ! The Governor asked Indiana citizens to “pray for divine inter-| vention to protect Finnish noncom- | batants and contribute to the Fin- | nish War Relief Tn aa 3 |

Times Special SHELBYVILLE, Ind. Dec. 15. - Kiwanis Club members turned their regular weekly meeting here into a “jokefest” at the expense of an avowed Republican gubernatorial candidate and a “rumored” candi- | date for the same post. | With Circuit Judge James A.
