TER. I'd probably have been better off if I hadn't known these two were playing. sn tJ on A NOSTALGIC NOTE from the past: Joe Harmon, the present Cathedral coach, récalled today some of the gyms he played in back in 1921 when he was a member of the Irish squad. “Trickiest of the lot was the one at Petersburg. It was a classroom with the benches taken out. The ceiling was so low that the Petersburg boys had marks on it that they aimed for when shooting free throws. “We got onto that quick enough, but that wasn’t all. The walls of the room were the boundary lines of the court, and you can imagine my surprise when I saw the guy drib-]| bling along the wall. We beat them, though. That was a pretty good Cathedral team with Johnny Trenk,| Mark Mooney, Marvin Brezette and | Tom Hartnett on it. Al Feeney was the coach.”

By JERRY BRONDFIELD NEA Service Sports Writer Far-famed as a production center for great football teams, the Southwest should make its strongest bid for national basketball prominence this winter. Four teams are expected to make it a photo finish in the league race and two are likely contenders for national honors. It’s a brave soul who will attempt to pick an ultimate champion from a group consisting of Texas, Arkansas, Baylor and Rice, but a little closer’ analysis reveals the first two to have a slight edge in the

matter. And then, if you want to narrow it down still further, the choice— on paper, in early season estimates —should go to Coach Jack Gray's Texas Longhorns, defending champions. Gets to Top in a Hurry Gray, sparkplug of Texas’ great 1935 team, is the youngest bigtime coach in the business, but age hasn’t prevented him from bringing the Longhorns to the top. With four of last year’s five regulars returning it looks like another banner season. The Longhorns are comparatively small but they make up for it in speed and clever ball-handling. Big John Freiberger, tallest man in the league at 6 feet 8 inches, is a very maneuverable cog at center and does a great job on rebound work. Rice, with four of last year's regulars back for more, will pin hopes on a big and fairly fast bunch.
