BREMEN PLAYED HIDE AND SEEK, SKIPPER CLAIMS
British Sub Crew Made Fool of Self, Ahrens Says In Interview.
NEW YORK, Dec. 15 @. P).—-
The German wireless vesterday car- | ried an interview with Commodore |
Adol!l Ahrens, captain of the Bremen | in which he told how the $20.000.000 | luxury liner twice ran the British | blockade, the second time after a pleasant stay in Murmansk, Russia, where the local girls entertained the crew, The seven-day trip from New York to Murmansk, which the cap- | tain Identified only as “4 neutral port,” was not particularly eventful, | but the voyage from Murmansk to | Bremerhaven, Germany, was a game | of hide and seek, according to the interview, | He once sighted a warship of the British blockade fleet, the radio in- | terview said, but the warship apparently did not see the camouflaged Bremen.
Follows Zig-Zag Course
“When escorting airplanes called altention to the submarine danger,” he was quoted as saying, “we imme.
diately steered a zig-zag course, and | §
since our speed was greater than | that of the submarine traveling | under the water, this danger was Very soon averted.” As for the crew of 66 which took | the Bremen through its adventures. Capt. Ahrens said that “with & crew like that it is possible to go through | thick and thin. The Bremen'’s sailors | are fine fellows who are capable of playing the English a good old sail-| or’s trick. The radio said Capt. Ahrens be- | lieved U. S. authorities held up the! Bremen’s sailing from New York un- | til Aug. 30, four days before war was declared, to give Britain cruisers | time to get into position to inter- | cept her. | A British merchantman left port the same day, Capt. Ahrens said, | and he altered the liners course *‘to make it appear as though the Bre- | men were bound for the Azores or the Mediterranean.”
Vessel's Hull RePainted
The course was altered subse-| quently for Murmansk and while the | crew repainted the hull, the vessel’s speed was held at 27 miles an | hour, | Their treatment in Murmansk was “most cordial,” Capt. Ahrens said. The crew were given warm clothes to enable them to endure the cold and were entertained by “artists of the region who delighted us with their dances and songs.” As for the voyage to German waters, the radio said, Capt. Ahrens “answered with a sly smile that ‘no-| body knew anything.’” it was carried out so secretly. | During both trips, Capt. Ahrens said, the crew was ready at any mo- | ment to scuttle the ship to prevent capture But the British never knew the ship's whereabouts, the radio said, | adding that ‘the British submarine | which made such a fool of itsels | . apparently was quite wuninformed. KUHN ‘BORED’ WITH | PRISON INACTIVITY
—— | OSSINING, N. Y., Dec. 15 (U.P). Fritz Kuhn is “bored’ with his inactivity at Sing Sing Prison, his guards said yesterday, and has “informally suggested’ that he be put to work. Since his arrival to serve two and a half to five years for grand larceny, the 42-year-old Bundesfuehrer has been held in praogective custody because prison officials, feared other inmates might harm him. Made restless by the closa confinement, Kuhn has suggested, it was reported, that his knowledge of English, German, French and Spanish might make him useful in some clerical capacity. |
