The Smith Library of the Indiana § Historical Society ends this calendar year with the largest acquisition of books, manuscripts, maps and prints ever acquired In any year, The chief acauisition was the purchase of the Arthur G. Mitten collection. Mr. Mitten was a collector for many years at Goodland. Ind, and his collection was purchased for $9000 by the society. It deals in general with the POA coat rs Northwest Territory, and contains ffdy AR RSA the signatures of all the Presidents, Mao 167 books, 296 pamphlets, 109 maps, | 1100 manuscripts, including letters by George Washington; 16 handbills, and a large collection of

prints. The library obtained by gift and

purchase 172 more books, 27 pamph- ® lets, 39 issues of periodicals, three k prints, five maps, a medal, 61 manu-

scripts and two handbills.
