Early Diagnosis Will Be

Stressed in April Campaign.

The Early Diagnosis Campaign, an immediate use for Tuberculosis Christmas Seal funds, will be emphasized this year as part of the annual campaign against tuberculosis. The Early Diagnosis Campaign will be held during April, 1940. It is an educational campaign to teach the public that the early discovery of tuberculosis is imperative for a complete cure. Every county in Indiana is represented in the state drive, which opened Dec. 1. Of the funds collected, 95 per cent will remain in the state and 5 per cent will go to the national association for medical research, and advisory and supply service. During the 33 years of Christmas Seal campaigns, the death rate caused by tuberculosis has been cut two-thirds, Campaign officials estimate that in this time more than 2,000,000 lives have been saved by campaign funds. MINTON CITES NEED OF COAST DEFENSE

NEW ALBANY, Ind, Dee. 13 (U. P.) —Senator Sherman Minton (D. Ind) said today that successful . 8. defense of the Panama Canal Zone depended upon the degree of co-operation given by nearby Central American republics. Senator Minton recently returned from a 12,000-mile air tour of the U. S. military defenses as a member of the Senate Military Affairs Committee. He said he believed the Canal Zone could be attacked by a landing force or by sea and added that an aggressor could “make it mighty tough for us” by attacking this “jugular vein.” Senator Minton said Japan had bought large areas of land in Guatemala and indicated he believed the land could be turned into bases. He said, however, that all Central American nations were friendly to the U. S.
