All Elements in Christmas Charity Shows Are Donated.

—By HARRY MORRISON

A letter received from one who signs himself “Xmas Spirit” points out that recognition should be given to the movie distributor as well as the neighborhood house for these free Christmas shows being given at this time of year. Checking up, we find that everything that goes into the production of the free show is given gratis. The film, the use of the house and its personnel, advertising, transporta- — tion and traffic protection are all donated. Most of the Christmas shows will be so-called “food shows” with entrance by canned food, meats and vegetables. In this case also the products are donated. The food is given to investigated charities and needy

Keaton 'Gets Works' But He'll

HOLLYWOOD, Dec. 9.—Buster Keaton has his best role in years in the MacDonald-Eddy musical, “New Moon,” but it's doubtful that

even such substantial recognition means as much to the dour-faced comic as the ribbing he has been getting from W. 8S. Van Dyke, the director. Makes him feel right at home, Late the other evening a messenger rushed to Keaton's house with a 380-page script and a note ordering him to read it all and to learn as much as possible of his

although he still. couldn't identify himself among the characters. Called for his first scene that afternoon, he found the situation completely strange and got a rak-

ing-over from Van Dyke for not |

knowing the proper lines, Through some puzzling circumstance, Keaton again had been given a wrong script. He'll get even with the director, and nobody realizes it better than Van Dyke himself. The comedian has a long-standing reputation as a ribber to maintain, especially on the Metro lot. Back in his silent, starring days his dressing room suite was full of electric chairs, crash boxes, musical bathroom fixtures, and a terrifying chute by which he could, and would, spill even the most dignified visitors clear out into the street,

leads interchanged, and it has come in for a good deal of wisecracking. Yet, with the treatment given it by Director Howard Hawks, along with the help of an

able cast, it looks like another hit which can be added to Cary Grant's list of screen credits. Mr, Grant is an actor who is doing very well in spite of himself. More than two years ago, when he was a good deal less in demand then he is at present, he signed reluctantly for the lead in “The Awful Truth.” Almost immediately he got cold feet and declared that he'd give $10,000 just to get out of the commitment. Director Leo McCarey was angry Grant $20,000 to get out.
