Among 5574 in State Who Will Benefit, Says Van Geyt.

A Christmas gift, in the form of] Give" that they are eligible to re- |

These persons are among the 5574 in the state who will become eligible, Peter J. Van Geyt, manager of the

Social Security Board office, said.

They will be those to whom lump

sum benefits have been paid since the Federal old-age insurance Sys-

tem was established Jan. 1, 1937, he §

The amended act moved the date!

for monthly benefits up two years to 1940 and makes it possible for a wage earner to qualify after he is 65, even if he has already received a single cash settlement, Mr. Van Geyt said. Under the original law a qualified worker could obtain only a lump sum payment equal to 3.5 per cent of his total wages. “This amendment to the Social Security. law means that the age barrier to obtaining Federal retirement insurance has been torn down,” Mr. Van Geyt said. “Previously a man who had reached 65 before the law went into effect could not qualify for benefits. Now he may receive payments after he has worked at least six calender quarters since the amendment, earning a minimum of $50 in each of the quarters, and is retired. The quarters do not have to be consecutive.” Others Eligible in May Since the amendment went into effect Jan. 1, 1939, the earliest possible time the persons aided by the amendment could become eligible for benefits will be in May ‘of 1940, provided they earned their $50 quarter allotment in April, Mr.' Van Geyt added. : He said lump sums already paid to persons who will be eligible for pension in January will be deducted from the monthly benefits to be distributed.

SUPER HIGHWAY PLANS DRAFTED

8-Lane Chicago-to-Detroit Road May Run Through Calumet Region.

Times Special HAMMOND, Ind, Dec. 7.—An eight-lane super highway linking Chicago to Detroit may soon be built through the Calumet region, according to present plans of the Chicago Regional Planning Association and the Michigan Highway Commission. The proposed route would be on a direct line to Toledo, O., and then north to Detroit. Both groups sponsoring the highway are working out preliminary details and when estimates are completed, they will apply for a Government grant to cover construction costs. Murray D. Van Wagoner, Michigan Highway Commissioner, has announced his organization is committed to construction of such a highway.
