MANY QUIZZED IN MURDER OF

NAZI ATTACHE

International Complications Possible in Mysterious N. Y. Bludgeoning.

NEW YORK, Dee. 7 (U.P) —Authorities rounded up all the friends of Walter Richard Pngelberg, murs dered secretary of the German Cone sul General, today hoping to lear whether his slaver had been motivated by personal or political hatred, The brutal bludgeoning of the Nazi official confronted them with all the elements of a fictional mur-| der mystery, d case fraught with possibilities of international compli-! cations, Police announced today that 15 of his friends, associates and neigh- | bors had been unable to give them | any information of value. The case was listed as having an ‘open motive, with robbery definitely out.”

Found Shlain in Bed

5 Herr Engelberg was found beaten |

to death in his bed at his Brooklyn home shortly after 1 p. m. yester-| day. Medical examiners said he had been dead at least 24 hours Because he was in bed, clad in a nightshirt, it was believed he was slain Monday night or early Tues day. Detectives sought geven or eight men who had shared the five-room | two-story house with him at dif. ferent times during the past year The hed in a room adjoining that in which he was slain had been slept in recently. Dresser drawersy and the closet, empty, were open in the second bedroom, indicating that its occupant might have packed hurriedly, The back door of the house was unlocked, the Kev on the outside Herr Engelberg was unpopluar in the neighborhood, Neighbors were suspicious of him and several reported that a trailer containing radio sending and receiving equipment had been parked in front of the house last summer,

FBI Denies Inquiry

Neighhors told police that two agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had questioned Herr Engelberg last August after receiving a complaint from his next-door neighbar, Fred E. Fuller. But the FBI denied that such a complaint ever had heen made Detectives learned that no woman ever had been seen to call at the house, but that Herr Engelberg fre. quently had had men visitors, some of whom arrived in expensive automobiles,
