MOVIES A Vote

By JAMES THRASHER of Confidence to Holly-

wood for Delightful Film Surprises.

SECOND THOUGHTS on first impressions: This week's cinema fare is such as to make us want to extend to Hollywood a vote of confidence and maybe toss in a couple of fan letters for good measure.

From Miss Garbo’s laughter in *

‘Ninotchka"” to Miss Dietrich's hair-

pulling, chair-throwing deglamorization in “Destry Rides Again, " the

new movies have as many delightfu has raisins. Regarding “Ninotchka,” it might be said that every time Miss Garbo adds a new human expression to her screen vocabulary, there is cause for rejoicing. Nine years ago, in “Anna Christie,” the slogan was “Garbo talks.” But we got, besides the star's first throaty SwedishAmerican syllables, a grand performance in an excellent play. And to top it off, "Anna Christie brought back Marie Dressler to the screen with a delightful and memorable performance—and kept her there as long as she lived. Now “Garbo laughs” in “Ninotchka” (don’t pronounce it—see it!). And having seen it, I should like to pronounce the pelief that the screen play itself is one of the most significant and encouraging things to come along in quite some time.

IN THE CURRENT film at | Loew's, the movie makers have dis-| covered the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics, For 20 years now, Hollywood has refused even to recognize the existence of this farflung country and its teeming mil- |f lions. Except for the new sreels and an innocuous and amusing trifie called “Tovarich,” the revolution of | 1917 might never have occurred. The studios have tiptoed around Russia like children passing the haunted house at night. And now that they have plucked | up their courage, its result is no hymn of hate. Instead it is the| more subtle but deadlier weapon of gatire. M-G-M has gone boldly up| to the bear that walks like a man, armed only with the pinpoint of wit. But it has deflated a lot of posturing and polemics with one] swift thrust.

” ” 8

WHY THE THRUST has been $0 long in coming is something of a} mystery, Certain themes have been | avoided, naturally; no good mer-| chant, even if he is selling motion | pictures, feels he can afford to in- | sult a good paying customer. But | Russia, I believe, has bought only | two American films in the past three years, “Modern Times" i “100 Men and a Girl.” So the reagon can’t be commercial. Meanwhile, of course, the Soviets | have lampooned and berated capi- | talism repeatedly in good, bad and indifferent films. So there can't | have been anv gentleman's (or comrade’s) agreement to make Holly- | wood act as if Leningrad were still St. Petersburg.

” s ”

IT 18 GOOD to see, then, the first commentary upon the New Russia is delivered with the, “Lubitsch touch.” When Hollywood | first spoke out against the Nazi regime it was in a bitter bans called “Confessions of a Nazi Spy.” And it’s not to discredit the serious aspects of that picture's theme, or, to hold any brief for naziism, to say that hatred, per se, is not rutin ally digestible But “Ninotchka” is a different story. The young French count meets Comrade Ninotchka, Soviet special envoy, in the middle of a traffic snarl. He is attracted to her. He learns that she is Russian. Then, | making polite if somewhat embarrassed conversation, he remarks: | “I've admired your Five-Year Plan for the last 15 years.” : It's a direct hit. The audience roars with laughter. The whole condemned, reverenced and mis- | understood Soviet setup suddenly looks foolish, and consequently human, Director Ernst Lubitsch also has another merry trick up his sleeve in the presence of the three male] envoys from Moscow, those three | Marxist brothers so delightfully! played by Sig Rumann, Felix Bressart and Alexander Granach. “Ninotchka's” theme, of course, makes no pretense of being factual. | with all its clowing and exaggera-| tion it does seriously suggest, how- | ever, that behind all the propagan-| da and contradictory principles and | whooped-up exaltation of state, there do exist in Russia some very human and simple ani likable per-| sons. For Ninotchka and her three | comrades turn out to be individuals in whom the bourgeoise vices of romance and laughter and wine, of innocent selfishness and personal enjoyment, kindle a new warmth and make them come alive.

A COMEDY ABOUT the Soviet! Union might seem a trifle ill- timed | in view of that country’s dis illusion- | ing actions since the picture was in! production. Yet in the minds of] some American enthusiasts, its iy tion in Poland has been justified] and its present course may likewise find adherents. But if any earnest fellow traveler can remain unshaken after the | tremendously deflating experience of | “Ninotchka,” he will have to resort to such old standby explanations as “capitalistic (or bourgeoise, tory, | fascist, Trotskyite) propaganda.” And his explanation very likely | will be drowned out in the gale of | laughter which “Ninotchka” at long

last has released. Re Lye Allce Faye-Don Atveche “HOLLYWOOD CAVALCADE" ORI
