19 New Cases Reported in Last Six Weeks, Heaviest Ye -Season for Disease.

¥ . Infantile paralysis struck late this year in Indiana and its toll was inuch lighter than in other years. Last year there were 56 new cases. In the last six weeks, when the in-

fection has been the greatest of the year, 19 new cases have been re-

: Doctors had expected the toll to be heavy this year. . Most of the: 19 stricken were young, the oldest was 23, the youngest a year and a half old.

Riley Hospital Recognized While little is known of the ~ prevention -of the disease, a good

deal is known about the rehabilitation of those stricken. Riley Hospital here is one of the recognized treatment centers. To it the national foundation, for which money rw is being raised in the President’s party campaigns, has granted a $6000 fund. “With this fund, two more technical experts have been added to the Riley staff to work under the orthopedic staff's direction on an evaluation project. The four best known methods of treatmént are to be used on these victims of the disease, and careful note will be taken at all steps and of all reactions.

Four Methods Popular

All data will be compiled and then the staff will evaluate the different methods in the light of accomplishments. Undoubtedly, they say, certain features of all four treatments will be selected as best and from this may be built a sort of composite treatment. = The four best known methods are the Kendall, which originated in Baltimore;. the Lewman, which originated in California; the Sister Kenney, which originated in Australia, and the one which was started at Harvard University. Last year the grand total of cases treated at Riley, old and new, was 241, and this year, so far, the grand total is 305. It takes a long time and patient

work to rehabilitate those diseased|

muscles and “put the victims back on their feet.” Year after year most of them must have treatments. And, by the same token, year after year the physicians learn a little more about the treatments.

: ROPE TRICK FAILS

EAST LIVERPOOL, O., Nov. 30 (U. P.).=Too much rope, a tin cup and a bottle of bay rum proved the downfall of an. East Liverpool man. He was arrested while passing bay rum by means of a. 12-foot rope to prisoners in the city jail. Eight of them had become intoxicated.

Dawson Is Re-Elected

Charles Dawson, Washington Township trustee, was re-elected secretary-treasurer. The association, which’ is composed of 12 organizations, has taken over the entire eighth floor of the Claypool. A public officials’ trade show is being held. in connection with the convention. Each group will hold separate | meetings during the ' convention. Today, a joint session will be held for discussion of mutual problems.

ENGINEER FORESEES HOTHOUSE BASEBALL

SWAMPSCOTT; Mass., Nov. 30 (U. P.).—An electrical engineer foresees the day when big league baseball. will be played in a hothouse. ‘Robert: J. Swackhamer of General Electric's Nela Park, O. laboratory, in a talk to engineers here, said the Yankee Stadium in New York could be roofed and given an indirect lighting system for comfortable night games. Air-conditioning and heating apparatus would provide healthy atmosphere inside such a huge arena and games coilld be played in rain or: shine, winter or summer.
