It Is the Victory Luncheon
The Victory luncheon of the women’s committee of the Symphony Society yesterday at the Athenaeum was indeed a victorious
occasion. Members heard the announcement that the committee
yesterday passed its 1000-membership mark. Four hundred of that membership from Indianapolis and an estimated 40 cities over the state were on hand for the celebration. Following a buffet luncheon members moved to the auditorium for a lecture by Mrs. Lenore Coffin and then on to the concert and the tea. The lunchéon honored women who during the subscription campaign sold over 10 season tickets. Miss Irma Mae Steele received the large silver pitcher: symbolic of thg most successful solicitor from Mrs. Frederic M. Ayres, committee president. Other honored members were Mesdames Hazel Williams, Amelia Menegas, F. C. Groninger, William H. Gibbs, D. Laurance Chambers, Dan Flickinger, Philip Adler Jr. H. H. Arnholter, Sylvester Johnson, Powell of Columbus, John O. Campbell of Marion; Helen T. Whitcomb, Shelbyville, and the Misses Mildred Fallender, Betty Tharp and Rosaline Soloman. The buffet luncheon was served from tables covered with blue satin covers decorated by leaves gilded in silver. American Beauty roses in large silver vases and silver tapers in threepranched candelabra stood on the speaker’s table. White tapers and bouquets of yellow chrysanthemums were used on the other tables. :
What They Were Wearing
In the fashion eye: Mrs. Frederic M. Ayres wore a burgundy wool dress caught at the throat with a gold ornament. A burgundy hat was striking atop her silver hair and burgundy gloves completed the outfit. . . . One good glance revealed that the old standby black is still predominant for luncheon and matinée wear. . . . Several bright red hats and accents stood out here and there. . . . Royal plue was seen on some as well as in the Victory decorations. . . .
Mrs. Herbert M. Woollen, who has served as luncheon chairman
for three years, presided in a black dressmaker suit with gold and black striped velvet scarf and turban to match. . . . Her assistant, Mrs. Hortense Rauh Burpee, could be seen moving here and there in a black two-piece dress accented by gold jewelry and topped
off with a purple velvet turban. Mrs. Burpee’s daughter, Mrs. David Laurance Chambers Jr.
who was busy with ticket collecting, wore black wool with a bustle fullness at the waistline, with red and black plaid jacket and black hat with gay feather. . . . Mrs. Jack A. Goodman, who headed this year’s subscription campaign, chose black with jet outlining a square neckline for her luncheon dress and with it wore a black tricorn
Observations: The male society members, though few, were on hand to help the women celebrate. . . . The interest in the orchestra out in the state must be growing as the unit tables for"state towns made up more than one-fourth the attendance. . . . Ferdinand Schaefer’s introduction brought a loud round of applause. . . . Mrs. Charles Latham, membership chairman, was credited with much of the increase in the membership role.
