Water Sediment Basin Gets ‘Saturday Bath’

The sedimentation basin at ‘the Indianapolis Water Co. purification plant gets only one bath a year, but that one is pretty strenuous. It lasts two and a half days, with crews of workmen in three shifts wielding high pressure streams of water from fire hose. A portion of the 15-acre settling basin, on W. 16th St. is getting prettied up this week, ready for another year’s service in clarifying the City’s water supply. Water el the - basin is treated with aluminum sulphate, which attracts to it mud and other

solid materials found in White River water. This sinks to the bottom of the basin and the cleansed water passes on to the filter beds for further purification. By the end of a year, the settled material, known as sludge, is eight or nine feet deep in the channel of the basin nearest the inlet, and
