He is the Butler fennis champion, and on this, the third day of basketball practice, he looks as though he had been in training for the last six months, These boys are all fast enough to give a greyhound a 10-foot lead and still: beat it to the wire, but they aren’t tall. i SPOKANE, Wash, Nov. 16 U.P). —Coach Clark Shaughnessy of the University of Chicago was the favorite to win today’s game—a game of “moanin’ low.” The coach whose football team

has piled up a total™of 13 points

against its opponents’ 267, was in the lead for a prize given annually by the Athletic Round Table of Spokane to the football mentor who writes the sobbin’est letter on football prospects. The winner will be sungunced tonight. Coach Shaughnessy’s letter: “Gentlemen: “I'm sitting in the locker room trying to work out a play that can get our fullback up to the line of scrimmage without a broken leg when in walks a guy without knock-

ing. “ ‘Listen, brother,” he says. ‘I don’t know who who you are but I'm a football coach. Listen: “ ‘The woes of Poland would only half fill my cup of gall and vinegar.

Millions for Books

“ ‘What a wealth of material the alumni sent me this year. They gave the school 15 million dollars for new books but what did they give me? A sideshow that should have been palmed off on a circus. “‘The ends were seven-footers and tipped the scales at 130—who says nothing went over their heads?

. Traffic Light in End Zone “‘The two -halfbacks were expélled from a school for unnecessary roughness. They were two days late in returning “The Grapes of Wrath” and a librarian squealed. “ ‘The school won’t buy us score ing equipment but the athletic beard is coming across nicely. They have promised to put in trafic lights in our end zone to cut down the collisions in our backfield. A toll bridge would help more.’ . . “The man stopped. Protest of Rams Called “Ballyhoo’!

DETROIT, Nov. 16 (U. P.).—Gus Henderson, head coach of the Detroit Lions, today termed the demands of the Cleveland Ranis for the services of their coach, Dutch Clark, as an active player “insincere ballyhoo.” Clark joined the Cleveland team at the end of the 1938 season as manager and coach, but the Lions retained his playing contract. This week the Rams, who meet Detroit Sunday, asked Detroit for a full release on Clark so that he could be used against his former teammates as a player. They accused the Lions of a “dog-in-the-manger attitude” when the Detroit management offered to release the playing contract in return for Parker Hall or

Johnny Drake, ace Ram backs.
