Thanksgiving is still ofte or two weeks away, depending upon- one’s political affiliations, but already the entertainment calendar is on that busy and festive look of the holiday season.
On the movie front, Loew’s has
of their typical comedies after an absence from the screen that was too lengthy for the ardent Marxian disciples. Beginning tomorrow, the Lyric
"again presents - Horace: Heidt, his band and assorted entertainers. They are the boys and girls. who hold ‘the vaudeville theater's 27-year attendance record, hung up in - August, 1938. At the Indiana, Frank Lloyd, the ~man who made “Mutiny on the Bounty,” comes back temorrow with another maritime epic in “Rulers of the Sea,” which is about the conquest of the Atlantic by steam. And at the Circle, Deanna Durbin will be getting her first screen kiss in “First Love.” Eo ss 8 = ENGLISH'S TONIGHT presents Paul Vincent Carroll's comedy, “The White Steed,” with Whitford Kane, Gertrude Flynn, Ralph Cullinan and several others, including William Cragin, the Brooklyn, Ind, boy who made good on Broadway. And the Civic is closing its run of ¥Night Must Fall.” ~The general critical consensus has been that “The White Steed” is better than Mr. Carroll's previous play, “Shadow and Substance,” which was received with almost ‘boundless enthusiasm itself.- » # = FOR THE MUSIC LOVER, the week-end brings one of the year’s
~ most important events, the open-
ing of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra's 1939-40 season. Fabien ‘Sevitzky will conduct the initial concerts at the Murat tomorrow afternoon and Saturday night. : » » » : AND NOW BACK to the movies: Toew’s new picture is titled “The Marx Bros. at the Circus.” It enlists, in addition to the expected corps. of movie performers, a representation of real circus acts. Included among the big-top artists are Eve Arden, the girl who actually walks afid dances on the ceiling— with the aid of suction-cup shoes. ‘Others are Paul Merkel, the acrobat; the Escelante Family Troupe and Charles Gamorra, who lays
taking the Marx brothers returning in one
claim to the title of world’s champion gorilla imitator. It may mean more to the Marx followers, that once again Chico will play the piano, Harpo will chase girls and perform on the harp, and Groucho will direct -the brunt of his practical humor at Margaret Dumont, the dignified foil of most of their pictures. In this instance, the stately Miss Dumont will be shot from a cannon, kissed by a giraffe, chased by a gorilla, swung from a flying trapeze and pusBed down a flight of stairs. Well, its a living. = tJ 2
SPEAKING OF BEING pushed downstairs, Lyric patrons might just as well prepare themselves to walk the plank during the coming week, or else know their popular tunes. Maestro Heidt will call audience members to the stage during each performance, where they'll take part in a music recognition contest. They will be blindfolded and put on a plank. Snatches of music will be played. If the contestant misses, he will have to walk the plank. (If doesn’t hurt, really.) And if he guesses correctly, he gets a prize—a Treasure Chest
The orchestral portion of Mr. Heidt’s weekly “Pot O’ Gold” broadcast will originate on the Lyric stage next Tuesday night. But the selector wheel for picking the: lucky telephone number will remain in New York, so there will be a two-way broadcast hookup. # # #
“RULERS OF THE SEA” gives American movie audiences their first look at the famous Scottish come=dian, Will Fyffe, who has the top supporting, spot with Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Margaret Lockwood. The first look, that is, unless they happened to see the British-made film, “To the Victor.” It.was on the basis of this that the gnomelike Scotsman was called to Hollywood and cast in one of Paramount's big pictures of the year.
Here we have Harpo, Groucho and Chico (reading from laugh to'riot, as voices in song with a companion who, it is announced, definitely is not a fourth Marx Brothers. However hel'll appear with the mad trio in “The Marx Brothers at the Circus,” opening at Loew’s today.
“It works!”
Engineers Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Will Fyffe beam on the engine model which eventually is going to carry a steamship across she Atlantic. It all happens. in “Rulers of the Sea,” opening
tomorrow at the Indiana.
