SEATTLE, Wash, Nov. .14.—Be-

«cause a friend happened to mention

that the neon sign on the corner: of a downtown hotel killed a lot ‘of moths, Prof. Frederick K. Kirsten of the University of Washington, devised his latest apparatus, an electric moth-killer.

[cylinder containing a transformer [and having on the outside two electric rings. The top ring is a red- {| glowing neon lamp and the lower one is filled with mercury vapor and gives a blue light, rich with invisible ultraviolet rays. - The red attracts the moths. As soon as they come néar, the ultraviolet rays from the lower blue rirg partially disintegrate them. The machine, when perfected, is expected to be of grsat value to fruit ranchers. One machine is expected to be sufficient for an acre of trees. Elmer Kinyon, apole-grower of Naches, Wash., installed three fixtures last spring. It was found that lights had attracted and killed as many ‘as 450 codling months each.

tapped, much as brain. waves are tapped to tell significant facts about, mental activity. . The feat of tapping the nerve waves has been accomplished by Drs. A..L. Hodgkin and A. F. Huxley, of the Laboratory of the Marine Biological Association here. An electrode, for changes in electric potential, was

inserted - into a living nerve, the giant axon of the squid: * Although

measuring

this recently discovered axon . is termed “giant,” it is pretty small by ordinary measurements. The electrode used to tap its messages was ‘so tiny that the tips of 254,000 such electrodes, laid side ‘by side, would only fill one inch of space. Using a microscope, the scientists were able to insert this tiny instrument into the nerve and to take -a picture of it ‘within the nerve. The results of the experiment; reported to the scientific journal, Nature, are important for two reasons: 1. They prove that the electrical potential accompanying nervous messages arise at the surface of :the axon. . 2. They give the absolute magnitude of the action potential as about 90 millivolts ‘at 20 . degrees Centigrade.

lit will be lights out for most of them if he leaves the White House.

Popularity Gains

As part of the “Draft Roosevelt” strategy, some of the New Deal tacticians would not object if the President used the Jackson Day dinner in January to say he does not want to.run again. This sincere statement might shock a majority of his supporters throughout the coun- | try who take it for granted—what | with the war emergency and continuous third-term stories—that he will run, From that shock might grow a spontaneous . grassroots movement to “draft” him. None of the politicians on either side seems to doubt that the President would accept a third term if it were “forced on him by. overwhelming popular demand.” All polls show that the President’s popularity has increased since the outbreak of the European war. There is not much doubt that he could get the n ation for himself, and probably the election if the war continues. But it does not follow that he can use this personal popularity in dictating anether name to the convention, much less to the electorate next November.

McNutt ‘Compromise’

His persohal choice, in order, probably would be: Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, Solicitor
