How to Watch Hockey

(Fourth of a Series)

By CARL SHATTO Times Special Writer

One of the natural instincts of man is to defend himself, and by long odds the most natural defensive action is the raising of the hands. In 99 out of #00 sports such action is permissible, but in hockey it is strictly taboo, and should the emphatic lowering of the hands immediately . following their raising, a penalty that can extend through several games and be accompanied by a salty fina may be incurred.

The reason for hockey’s apparently singlar rule is not at all mystifying. No head is too high to be dented, and a hockey player, when in action, is never without a sturdy, 53inch hockey stick in his hands.

It’s Dangerous Practice Those of you who see only professional hockey. games may experience some difficulty in appreciating the results of schooling which an icer shows when he sees one or more enemies bearing down upon him at: breakneck speed and meets them head-on without raising his hands above his shoulders. One can best appreciate this -by watching an amateur, and by amateur we do not mean an experienced, well-paid performer who is masquerading behind a phony amateur card in an upper-crust amateur league. Your really amateur defense man draws more than half his penalties for high-sticking or

slashing, and the latter is an out-

growth of the former in Y. 8 stick raised above the - shoulders often is lowered too speedily and forcefully. Of this dangerous practice the rule book says: “The carrying of sticks above the height of the shoulder is prohibited. A goal scored from a stick so carried shall not be allowed “When any player ‘carries or holds his stick above the height of his shoulder so that injury results to the face or head of an opposing player, the referee shall have no alternative but to impose a fiveminute penalty.”

Not Easily Detected

Slashing and cross-checking, out- |

growths of high-sticking, also draw penalties. The former, as the term applies, means forcefully str the person or stick of an opposing player. Cross-checking, the rules say, “Shall mean a check delivered with both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the. ice.”

In his book “Hockey,” Mervyn (Red) Dutton writes, “Cross-check-ing is perhaps the most difficult foul to watch. It is an evil, both from the point of view of the person committing the foul and from that of the person on whom the foul is committed. It can result in injury, for stick butts can dent a man’s ribs or poke into his face and inflict grave injury.” High-sticking, slashing and crosschecking usually are studied acts of revenge or retribution, rather than instinctive motions, when such fouls are committed by professionals.

SCORES HANDLING.

OF HOCKEY TRAFFIC

Donald 8S. Morris, Republican

member of the Safety Board, today criticized the handling of hockey game traffic at the State Fair Grounds Friday night, which he described as “an awful mess.”

Police Capt. Lewis Johnson as-

gerted that City police had not been requested to regulate traffic at the grounds, but had voluntarily handled traffic on 38th St. and College Ave. Capt. Johnson said the trafic direction within the grounds was a matter over which only the State Police had jurisdiction.

Mr. Morris said he believed the

Safety Board should attempt tq} solve future traffic problems at the grounds games or other events. Don Stiver, State safety director, said he had received no requests for a traffic detail by either the manager of the game or grounds officials

FOR DEATH SUSPECT|:

State police renewed today a 13-

year-old search for Willard E. (Kit) Carson, who'is wanted in connection with the murder of his father in Liberty, Ind., in 1926. Don F. Stiver, State Police super-| wz intendent, said a $1000 reward has been offered for Carson’s apprehension. The reward money, he said, will come from funds left to the fugitive in his father’s estate.

Carson was last seen by police and

relatives in 1928 when he came to the family home in an attempt to collect his share of his father’s estate. He fled when police appeared.
