If They Slip Tomorrow, It’s Goodby Title Hopes
By STEVE SNIDER United Press Staff Corresnondent CHICAGO, Nov. 10.—Once the, “cinch” champions of 1939, Michigan and Northwestern roll out tomorrow to protect their rapidly dwindling hopes for a share of the Big Ten football crown Ohio State has all but tucked away. Roth are slight favorites buf one more slip and it’s all over. Michigan, upset by Illinois last ‘week, tackles Minnesota at Ann: Arbor, Mich., in ore of those typically hard-fought struggles for the Little Brown ‘Jug, while Northwestern is playing Purdue at Evanston, Minnesota and Purdue haven't won a Big. Ten game. The only bright spot on their records is a 13-13 tie they played with each other. - : Teams like these, with potential power and plenty of fury stored up from previous disappointments, are the producers of upsets. Illinois furnished a prize example of that last week-end. Also . scheduled - are Ohio State

in a breeze at Chicago: ‘Wisconsin at Illinois; Indiana at Fordham and Notre Dame at Iowa. In the two non‘conference contests, the Big Ten teams apparently are in for a rough afternoon. - Minnesota's uncertain defense is the target of Michigan and its flying Tommy Harmon. Harmon has the speed to sweep around end which has proved vulnerable in every. game Minnesota has lost. Both Forrest Evachevski and Paul Kromer, injured first line backs, have returned and will be "available for heavy duty. Kromer missed the Illinois game entirely and Evashevski was injured early in that one.
Three Irish Regulars Out
Wisconsin, despite three straight Big Ten defeats, has high hopes of dropping - Illinois. The Illini, however, are on fire. There may be a letdown after that Michigan victory, but the probable reaction was to instill confidence.

Times'Special ' EVANSTON, Ill, Nov. 10.—Since early October the critics have been saying Purdue's football team is due. And. there are plenty who wouldn't be surprised if the Boilermakers break loose: tomorrow’ in their game with’ Northwestern's favered Wildcats. ; These two Big Ten foes will clash in Dyche Stadium before an expected gathering of 40,000. The. kickoff in ‘this 25th meeting between the schools is scheduled for 2 o'clock. The Wildcats will be in .quest of their fourth straight triumph, and victory is imperative to their title chances. Beaten by Ohio State, Northwestern is basing championship hopes on victories over Purdue and Iowa Nov. 25 and the chance that either Illinois or Michigan will stop Ohio State, currently leading ‘the race. Iowa alone was able to shackle them in what must go down’ as a distinct surprise, and the suspicion is that they'll come bouncing back hard off that upset. Northwestern will: send the Big Ten’s most potent offensive into action. In a quartet of conference struggles, the Purple has amassed a net gain of 954 yards, most of it along the ground, in which department the Wildeats are also league leaders.
