What Are These New Weapons? gen Bomb? Flying Torpedo?

By LEE G. MILLER Times Special Writer

WASHINGTON, Nov. 10.— Adolf Hitler spoke at Danzig a few weeks ago of a “new weapon” with which Germany would confound her enemies if they did not make peace. And now England retorts that she too has & “surprise” waiting for the enemy. Military men are inclined to poohpaah such claims. But if new and secret weapons exist, they say, these will probably be unveiled in a sudden large-scale offensive. In the World War, two such weapons—the tank and poison gas —were stripped of much of their effectiveness by being used first in an experimental way. The British introduced the first tanks in 1916, in the Somme offensive, but since only 49 tanks participated in the initial experiment, their ‘ success was limited. Before tanks were available in large numbers, the Germans were ready for them. Similarly, when the Germans first loosed clouds of chlorine along a four-mile front at Langemarck in 1915, they failed to take full advantage of the complete rout produced among the utterly surprised and defenseless Frenchmen. Before they could make real capital of the new weapon, the Allies had equipped their men with masks.

GEORGE RICKES, 60, FOUND DEAD IN HOME

George Rickes, former Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the Indianapolis School Board, was found dead yesterday in his home, 3830 N. New Jersey St. He was 60. His wife, Mrs. Cora Rickes, found the body in the basement when she returned home from downtown. A shotgun lay nearby. Mr. Rickes received head injuries in an automobile accident three years ago and had never completely recovered. Funeral services will be held at 3 p. m. tomorrow at the Flanner &

There is much speculation about the nature of the new surprises. One possibility mentioned is a liquid-oxygen bomb. It was supposed to have been such bombs, dropped “experimentally” in 1938, that fell on Barcelona with unprecedented destructiveness. There is talk also of “flying torpedoes”’—winged bombs controlled by radio from an airplane ‘mother ship” flying out .of artillery range. Germany physicists are said to have been engaged for several years on a death-dealing sound wave. They are said to have perfected it

WORKS ON NEW ATOM-SMASHER

Berkeley Professor Hopes To Drive Deeper Into Secret of Matter.

BERKELEY, Cal, Nov. 10 (U. P.). Dr. Ernest Orlando Lawrence, modest professor of the Nobel prize in physics, revealed today that he now is at work on a new atomsmasher that should extend the frontier of scientific knowledge im-

measureably. A grant of $40,000 accompanies the medal, which was awarded yes-

terday. The 38-year-old University of California professor, who attained world-wide attention when he designed a 75-ton cyclotron 10 years ago and. since has developed a 225ton atom-smasher, said he was construction. a 3000-ton monster with which he expects to drive.to the very core: of the composition of matter. It ‘will cost about one million dollars. “I'm overwhelmed, » he said. “I can’t believe it. Naturally I am pleased and honored for the increased opportunity this prize makes possible.” Working with his cyclotron, Dr. Lawrehce began research. into the artificial radioactivation of various substances which resulted in the “heavy” water, the ability fo transmute platinum into gold and otherwise reorganize nature’s complex atomic structure. His new equipment will permit exploration of energies in the atom above 100-million lon volts, he said.

Two Germans Turn Down Nobel Chemistry Prize.

BERLIN, Nov. 10 (U. P.).—It was learned authoritatively today that Profs. Adolph - Bugenandt and Richard Kuhn had declined to accept the Nobel chemistry prize because of the Nazi ban on acceptance of the awards by Germans. Herr Hitler, angered when the 1935 Nobel peace prize was awarded to the late Carl von Ossitzky, German pacifist who was then in a concentration camp, has forbidden any German to accept one of the foundation's awards.

72 AGENTS SIGN CODE PLEDGING TRUTHFUL ADS

Rules Apply to Used Car

Deals; in Effect Since Nov. 1.

Seventy-two auto dealers in Indianapolis have signed a code, sponsored by the Better Business Bureau, to secure truthful advertising of used cars. Under the code, the dealers agree to draw up their used car advertising in accordanze with 40 provisions, and Better Business Bureau officials

are to check advertising mediums daily to see that there are no violations. “There was a pretty general feeling that used car advertising had so many misleading statements that something had to be done about it,” explained T. M. Overley, manager of the Better Business Bureau. “And nearly all the automobile dealers themselves agreed that a code was the solution.”

Code Provisions Listed

Sixty-five dealers agreed to the code before it went into effect Nov. 1, and seven have signed since. The code provides: Words such as “perfect,” “wholesale” or “below wholesale,” “new,” “brand new,” “like new,” “looks or runs like new,” as pertaining to the used duto itself, shall not be used; nor shall there be used suc phrases as “direct from the fac tory,” “factory official's car or auto mobile” or similar expression meant to convey that a new car being sold. No pictures of cars shall be use in classified advertising unless the are the cars listed for sale in suc advertisement, and at the price of fered in the advertisement,

‘Guarantee’ Restricted

The phrases “factory guarantee.” “dealerd’s official guarantee,” or “new car guarantee” shalt not be used. | Advertising of a definite rade-in price for any and all cars regar less of condition, shall not be used.| Statements in advertising which are controversial, or which reflect on other advertisers or auto dealers, shall not be used. All auto finance plans advertised in the used car columns must limit the security requirements to the car itself. Advertisements using finance plans involving the mortgaging of household goods, jewelry or other security shall not be used. Comparative price statements or comparative value statements shall not be used. For example, you cannot say, $700 used car for $400.”

‘Based on Facts’

Cars advertised for sale must be in the possession of the advertiser as advertised, and at the address given in copy. Any advertised statements and offers as to make, model, year, condition, equipment price and terms shall be based upon facts. Advertising quoting monthly payments must state the number of payments, or the total price if a “balloon note” is used, together with the down payment required. Advertisements containing such phrases as “quitting business,” ‘“going out of business,” “closing out,” forced to sell,” “liquidation,” “bankruptcy,” are not acceptable unless such advertiser shall be willing to submit reasonable evidence of the truthfulness of such claims to the Better Business Bureau. No cars shall be advertised as being “sold for finance charges” or as

“repossessed” unless such cars actually are being sold for finance charges or have been repossessed.

Trials Shall Be Free

Statements such as “driving trial,” “free driving trial,” or any statements of similar import shall not be used in used car advertising unless the advertised car may be taken out for a trial period by the prospective purchaser without paying any consideration. ; The expression “nothing down” shall not be used unless the advertiser will deliver a car without any down payment or trade-in of any

kind. The terms “rebuilt” or “overhauled” shall mean that the car described has been rebuilt or overhauled by a competent mechanie, and that seriously worn parts have been replaced. Under provisions of the code, when the Better Business Bureau finds dealers violating the provisions, a letter will be sent calling attention to the misrepresentation, Mr. Overley said. Or if the advertising is definitely fraudulent, the advertising may be brought to the attention of the prosecuting attorney.

Packard Exhibits New Air-Conditioned Car

DETROIT, Nov. 10 (U. P.).—Driving in winter with the car interior as balmy as a tropical breeze or in summer with the interior as cool as an iced drink has finally become more than an engineer's dream. Packard Motor Car Co. researchers have developed a complete airconditioning system for autos that is really a refrigerating unit that can cool or heat an auto interior. It was shown for the first time at the Chicago Auto Show last week. Packard’s air-conditioner not only cools and heats at will, but it dehumidifies and filters, a point hayfever sufferers were quick to note, Cooling is obtained by means of | a refrigerating plant not unlike the | home icebox. The principle is the same, according to W. M. Packer, vice president of distribution for Packard, except that food can’t be stored in the car and expecied to stay 1 fresh.
