CHAILLAUX RAPS * BROWDER TALK
eon Emphasizes Reason |
For Legion’s Stand, He Asserts.
Earl Browder’s Boston speech Sunday was “brazen effrontery” in which the aims of the Communist Party in the United States were brought into the open, according to
Homer L. Chaillaux, national Americanism director of the American Legion
. In his speech, which reportedly displeased President Roosevelt, Mr. Browder was quoted as saying that President Roosevelt was surrendering to the greed of “economic royalists” for war profits and that this country was “ripe for a quick transition to socialism.” “Browder, accused of criminally violating the passport laws of the United States so that he might get to the seat of the Comintern and there receive first-hand instruction in the lessons of how best to achieve the ends of Communism in. the United States, takes it upon him-
‘self to openly avow the aims for
which he has so long worked,” Mr. Chaillaux said in a statemient is-
. Sued at Legion headquarters.
“This incident provides an instructive chapter in the history of the American Legion’s opposition to Communism and all the things for which Browder stands. It but serves to emphasize the reason that led the 21st annual convention of the American ‘Legion, recently held at Chicago, to call for legislation to outlaw the Communist Party.”

NEW YORK, Nov. 9 (U. P.)—A suit demanding $1000 from the Rev. Harry Rimmer for finding
“scientific errors” in the Bible was on file in Municipal Court today. William Floyd, 34, editor of the Arbitrator, contended that Dr. Rimmer had offered $1000 to anyone who could find a “scientific error” in the Bible, but refused to pay off when Mr. Floyd found several, Among others, Mr. Floyd disputed the story in the Book of Exodus and in Numbers, which says: “And there went forth a wind from the Lord, and brought quails from the sea, and let them fall by

(the camp as it were a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and as it were two cubits high upon the face of the earth. And the people . .. gathered up the quails.” Mr. Floyd said that if that was true, quails were piled 3.66 feet deep around the camp over an area of 2992 square miles—equal io the combined areas of Delaware and Rhode Island. Besides, he said, the camp's population probably - was about 2,414,200, and the number of quails probably = was 19,558,467,356,672, which, he figured, would force each person to gather 8,093,144 quails.

‘Crime Is Not Decreasing,’ - Sackett Tells Club of Presbyterians.
“The principal problem facing law enforcement agencies in the United States today is juvenile delinquency,” B. Edwin Sackett, Federal Bureau of Investigation agent-in-charge here, said last night. He spoke before the Men’s Club at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church.
“Contrary to popular belief,” he declared, “crime is not decreasing
first eight months of the year rape, burglary and larceny cases increased over a similar period in 1938.” “As a matter of fact, larcenies for the first six months of 1939 were more numerous than at any time since records began to be kept 10
years ago. . “To halt this the , civic, social and public institutions must aid in helping youth rather than letting peace officers do it all. They have their hands full fighting adult crimin; :
“Religious and educational institutions must take this problem to heart if we are to keep our youth from becoming criminals.”
