"He'd Feel Same ‘Way, He

Says, if Notre Dame Had Missed Em.

By ELMER LAYDEN Notre Dame Football Coach SOUTH BEND, Ind, Nov. 8— Dopester Dan, grandstand quarter back and downtown coach,” is worrying about that point-after-touchdown again. He wonders if it’s ‘quite fair. Wouldn't it be more just if first downs decided a tie? It’s true, I have reason to feel especially obligated this year to the kicked point after touchdown. It has been our margin of victory twice. Still, if we had missed our kicks, ors our opponents h a d made. all theirs, with the result that we had been: sed or beaten by thi Elmer Layllen Cor stl be in

favor of the point-after-touchdown

lay. P First of all, it’s as “fair for one as another. If you don’t have a drop- or place-kicker, you still may run or pass for the extra point. - . Secondly, to make first downs a determining factor is to put undue emphasis on sustained marching. Prom the strategical point of view, there is no more merit in marching for two touchdowns than in obtaining them by sudden far-out thrusts on’ the ground or in the air.. From the viewpoint of fairness, you automatically penalize the team which, because of inferior personnel, must resort to maneuvering and coups. Unfair to Navy We scored twice on Navy after marching a total of 419 yards with a proportionate number of first downs. Navy scored once on a long pass, on which no first down was recorded. Had Navy duplicated this feat and tied the score, should our first downs have decided the issue? I don't think so. If we could not convert 22 first downs into more “than two touchdowns, Navy should have the benefit of having stood firm under goal-line pressure. The time used to develop a consistent place-kicker is taken away from other departments of offensive play. While one coach is working with his place-kickers, another coach will be concentrating on his passers and runners. It all levels

off. What About a Genius?

Suppose, you have a place-kick-ing genius who doesn’t have to spend any of his valuable time or the coach's in practice—just steps back and boots that ball over in a game whenever he's called on. We'll also have to suppose in this connection we have another genius-without-practice — that all-import-ant, scarcely recognized young man who holds the ball. Does this constitute an unfair advantage? If it does, then the team with a superior punter, everything else being even, also has an' advantage that's unfair. “Yeh,” savs Dopester Dan. “But the punter is in the game—he has other duties to perform. If he can’t run and pass as well as punt, then his team penalizes itself by keeping him in there for his punting. You can run a specialist in for a placekick and run him out again.” Dan Won't Give In

Exactly, But when you run a specialist in, you may be taking a better runner, passer, tackler and blocker out. That evens it up again. “But,” persists the Dopester, “it may be the last play of a period. You can put ypur regular right back in the game.” When we or any other team get so good that we can time our touchdowns so that we can.use our speclalists without risks—well, we won't need points after touchdown. I don’t think the time has come to take the foot out of football. ‘Over the river.

delphia Ramblers ice hockey team,

By HENRY MLEMORE United Press Staff Correspondent NEW YORK, Nov. 8 —Col. Edward Riley Bradley finally caught a perfect hand after 50 years of waiting —and now nobody is going to call it. The old gambler from Old Kaintuck has come "up with straight flushes before. He had Behave Yourself, Bubbling Over, Burgoo King and Brokers Tip, Derby Winners all. But not until this year, after a half century of racing, did the flush come up royal. Bimelech is this baby’s name, and he has the look of eagles in his eye. The sweet smoothness of bluegrass is in his coat and the fire of old, old bourbon is in his legs. Six times he has answered the bugle’s call and six times he has led them all.

Clockers Replace Nurses

The thunder of his hoofs. dawn the stretch has done something for

Bradley that doctors couldnt do. Old now, and as the darkies around the stable wouid say, “doin’ po’ly” of late, the master of the Idle Hour Farm has drawn new life from this strapping brown-horse. Even as the doctors are clocking his pulse, the Colonel is clocking his colt. It is hard to say whether Bimelech has made more progress than his

back when the son of Black Toney went to the post the first time this summer as a 2-vear-old, but with each report of how his green and white barrel hoops were rolling down the stretch he gol better. Last week Bimelech won the sixth straight time; now the Colonel is out of bed and has changed the company of doctors and nurses for railbirds, clockers and swipes. No Prize Money or Cups

Men, the Coionel is more than just out of bed. He is up, taunting and flaunting the world of racing, and waving his pocket-book like a color sergeant on dress parade. To the Colonel, who had bred and raced the best, Bimelech is not just a 2-year-old horse. Bimelech is the greatest horse in the world and Bradley has challenged any owner of anything with four legs to get his animal out there, throw a saddle on him and await the bell with his baby. Colonel Ed didn't ask for any prize money or any cups. A gam-

KOKOMO, Ind. Nov. 8 (U. P.). —Interest in basketball hit a new high in Kokomo today when fans jammed the ticket office of the high school Wildcats in a rush for season tickets to home games. The most ardent fans were ih line at'3 a. m. today, 16 hours be-' fore the ticket sale was scheduled to begin. Fifty persons, each limited to two season tickets, crowded the office at 8 a. m.

bler all his life and one: who bet them “higher than a cat can arch his “back, he said he'd chunk his wallet on the table for a side-bet. All. he stipulated was a distance of around a mile and a sixteenth and a fast track. He was content to let Bimelech do the rest.? It was an ‘amazing challenge. With no warning whatsoever, the Colonel laid his wallet, his silks and his horse on the line, daring Challedon, Kayak 1I or any horse in any stable to try and take them away.

Kayak II Is Mum

But Bradley hasn't had any takers, which "would ihdicate that Bradley isn’t the only owner who thinks Bimelech can’t be beaten. Challedon said he already has taken his cottage in ‘South Carolina for the winter, and couldn't get out of the lease. Kayak II said nothing, and for once silence didn’t mean consent. So it looks as if Bimelech will have to wait for that soft May afternoon in Louisville to roll the Bradley hoops down in front again. That will be all right with the Colonel, too. Because no picture ever painted, no song ever sung, no word . ever written stirs ‘the Colonel quite as much as the sight of his saddle cloth hanging out to dry on the tote-board.
