SECRET SERVICE +" SLICES ‘TAKE’ IN

$3000 to $6000 Passed in|
State Every Year, Say ‘Agents.
By ROGER BUDROW.
Between $3000 and $5000 in fake]
money is passed in Indiana yearly
by agents of highly-organized coun-|
terfeiting rings with headquarters in eastern cities, according to George B. Loy, U. S. Secret Service head here. Pe : Before the Secret Service. broke up some of the larger gangs several years ago, Indiana was flooded with approximately $20,000 of bogus money each year, he. said. Not all the counterfeit bills are clever imitations of real ones. Mr. Loy's safe contains several $1 bills raised to 10s with pencils ‘and era‘sérs and “are: ‘the -crudest things I've ever seen accepted by persons who should know better,” he said. Some are $1 and $5 bills which have been split, glued together . and passed for $5 bills.
‘Smooth Agents’ Hardest
“These -were done by the ‘small fry’ and: they are not nearly as troublesome -to ‘us as the smooth agents of thé large gangs,” Mr. Loy said. “The best way to detect a raised note is always to count money by the portrait on the bill, not by the numbers.” He listed the following denominations and the portraits on them in legal money: $1—George Washington. $2—Thomas Jefferson. $20—Andrew Jackson. $10—Alexander Hamilton. $20—Andrew Jackson. $50—U. S. Grant. $100—Benjamin Franklin. Mr. Loy told of various means used in passing counterfeit money. “Counterfeit passers frequently advertise ‘that they want to buy diamonds from individuals at their homes,” the agent explained. “A confederate poses as a jeweler and estimates the value of the gem. The unsuspecting owner is given phony money for the diamond, loses the jewel and has nothing to show for it but a report in my office. Telegraph Firms Duped
“Sometimes they go to a small town telegraph office and pretend they want to wire $500 to a sick brother in another town. They pay in $100 bills and the confederate on the other end receives the cash in good money. “Another favorite trick is to register: at a hotel, send for a bell boy
. .and tell him they want 20 $10 bills
changed into two $100 bills to mail. When the trick is discovered the counterfeiters have left, of course. “Hospitals, too, are sometimes duped by a trick in which a passer poses as the uncle of a new-born baby and wants to leave it a present. He pretends that he has only a ‘$100 bill and wants to leave $50 as a gift. Someone at the hospital obliges. : “Stores have been tricked by a ruse in which a good-looking, well-
* dressed woman tries on a fur coat
costing about $400 and decides to take it, giving them a $500 bill. Because the store officials are cautious they spend a little time checking ' the authenticity of the bill. Customer Gets Angry “The ‘customer’ pretends to get angry at the delay and walks out, being sure to take the money. Later she returns, declares she likes the coat best of all and even though she
