LIFEGUARD, 78, BOWS TO YOUNG SWIMMER

BLAIR, Neb., Oct. 27 (U. P.).—For the last eight years Jonas Burcham, 78, has been lifeguard at the Blair swimming pool. This season he retired to make way for a younger swimmer. Mr. Burcham began swimming at the age of 4 and swam across the Missouri River when he was 9. He is credited with saving 94 persons from drowning during his lifetime. The feat of which he is most proud occurred in 1911 when, singlehanded, he rescued nine Boy Scouts who were swept into deep water while bathing in the Elkhorn River.

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 27 (U. P.).

—The Rev. Dr. E. Frank Salmon, rector of Holy Trinity Church, has suggested a three-year moratorium on sermons.

“That figure may be exaggerated,” he said, “but in my opinion there is far too much preaching. It is bad for you. Anybody at least 25 years old should be able to find the way to God by himself.”

POULTRY INCOME INCREASES NEW YORK, Oct. 27 (U. P.).-. The humble hen produces more gross income in the United States today than ever before. The value of poultry and eggs js almost $1,000,000,000 a year, or 12 per cent of all farm products, as compared with 5 per cent a generation ago, according to the American Poultry Jour-

HER JOB'S TO SING ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’

DETROIT, Oct. 27 (U. P.).—The recipients may be upset, but Mrs. Betty Irwin certainly isn't when she sings “Happy Birthday to You” over the telephone. She simply considers it part of her job with a telegraph company here and is even gratified to hear numerous compliments on her voice. Mrs. Irwin sings “Happy Birthday” an average of 30 times a day, and on occasion she will alter her repertoire to sing “Happy Anniversary to You” (to the same tune) and “For He's a Jolly Good Fellow.” But under no circumsf@nces will she

sing any other song, popular or classical. It’s just one of the rules.

CAT HIKES 10 MILES SPOKANE, Wash., Oct. 27 (U., P.). —The Persian cat of Arthur L. Jordan, police identification officer, disappeared from the Jordans’
